Gillard signs with the Halifax Mooseheads

Halifax, NS – According to a report in the Halifax Chronicle, 2011 Maine recruit Stephen Gillard has decided to forgo his scholarship with the Black Bears. Halifax Mooseheads’ General Manager Cam Russell had this to say in the Chronicle’s report.

“I saw him play at the Atlantics and then the first day in training camp but I thought that what I saw here he was probably the best defenceman on the ice that day,” Russell said. “He can skate, he’s good defensively and in today’s game the No. 1 quality you’re looking for is skating ability. He fits that mould.”

BlackBearWhite - 288x220Gillard, 17, had two goals and ten assists in 21 games with the St. John’s Fog Devils of the New Foundland Midget AAA league. In the playoffs, he had seven assists in eight games.

He committed to the University of Maine on April 15th. He joins fellow Mooseheads’ teammate Brent Andrews who committed to Maine over the summer then decided to jump ship to the QMJHL. Brandon Francisco also de-committed for the 2011 season when he signed with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League.

The 2011 recruiting class now includes Matt McNeely, Darcy Ashley, and Cam Brown.
