Eric Bonawitz signs with Lewiston, Coulombe traded to Quebec

Lewiston, ME – Dany Coulombe will be reacquainted with four teammates from last year’s Maineiacs squad as the team sent the 18-year old to the Quebec Remparts for a 2010 fifth-round draft pick late Sunday night.

He will be teammates again with Danick Paquette, Patrick Cusack, Dominic Savoie, and Peter Delmas.

Lewiston now has eight defensemen on the current roster.

“When (Eric) Bonawitz wanted to play here, we thought we had enough room in our roster to move Dany,” said Maineiacs’ President and Head Coach Don MacAdam.

“Dany was fine in camp. Dany is a good steady contributor.”

Bonawitz, 18, is from Lewiston and has decided to play for the hometown team.

“He committed yesterday before the game,” said MacAdam.

“I met with them (Don MacAdam and Roger Shannon) yesterday before the game and told them I wanted to play here,” said Bonawitz.

There are only three defensemen with QMJHL experiences on the current Maineiacs’ roster. According to Don MacAdam, the team doesn’t think there will be any problems.

“We aren’t nervous about our defense,” said MacAdam. “We have a number of young players that can play and contribute here. We are comfortable where we are at.”

Bonawitz is hoping he can be apart of this team for the next two seasons.

“I am hoping to play here for two years,” said Bonawitz. “I hoping to take charge, be a leader, and swee what I can do in the next two years.”

Bonawitz also said Coulombe is a good guy.

“It was real tough to see Coulombe go. He was a nice kid, a real friendly guy. He was really energetic on the ice.”

Expect Bonawitz to play in one of the two games against the Shawinigan Cataractes this weekend.

Mooseheads release Jonathan Connelly

The Halifax Mooseheads released former Lewiston Maineiacs goaltender Jonathan Connelly from his conditional try-out.

It’s unclear if he will remain property of the Lewiston Maineiacs.

“I think we still retain his rights, but I have to check the rules on that,” said MacAdam.

Connelly, 18, was 2-3 with a 4.62 goals-against average and a .818 save percentage with the Maineiacs last season.
