Sabres add another forward to the Pirates bounty

Portland, ME — It would appear the Portland Pirates have another piece of the puzzle — barring any setbacks from Buffalo Sabres training camp — as Sabres’ GM Darcy Regier announced today that they’ve signed Jeff Cowan to a one-year deal.

Jeff CowanCowan, 32, will fill a very important role with the Pirates giving them a veteran presence, something they desperately need with a young cast of players skating in Portland this season.

A veteran of 413 NHL games with Calgary, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Vancouver, Cowan has 81 NHL career points, and while he isn’t the offensive threat. He will provide leadership and some toughness as Cowan is more than willing to mix it up when needed. During his eight year NHL career, he notched 695 penalty minutes. Cowan also gives some stability to the locker room and is no stranger to the AHL as he played for the Peoria Rivermen — St Louis Blues AHL affiliate — last season where he scored five goals, 10 assists for 15 points.

Cowan was signed as an undrafted free agent in 1995 by the Calgary Flames.
