First round of cuts are made

Lewiston, ME – After two days of training camp the roster has trimmed down to 39 players. Damian Pinheiro, Charles Grant, and Shawn Hird were all released.

“One thing as an organization we discussed is we want to be different,” said Maineiacs’ General Manager Roger Shannon. “We want to work with kids and don’t want to put a boy’s eligibility at risk if they don’t have a strong chance of playing on the team.”

Hird will be heading to Woodstock, New Brunswick for the Woodstock Slammers training camp. Dylan Fitzpatrick, a fellow Mainer has also signed with the Slammers for the upcoming year.MaineiacsLouie - 235x235

Pinheiro, will head to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and join the Estevan Bruins. The SJHL is where Adrien Lemay last played before coming to Lewiston.

Two players have options to stick with the team. Eric Bonawitz and Tyler Piercy will have time to decide. Tyler Piercy will let the team know Friday morning on his future and will have a couple of days to think about it.

“He’s (Bonawitz) unsure what he wants yet,” Shannon mentioned. “We haven’t eliminated him yet but he won’t be playing in any games. At this point it’s a nice free hockey camp for him.”

“The toughest one obviously for us was Tyler Piercy. He can play here, we’ve known that or we wouldn’t have drafted him. We’ve giving him the option and it’s his choice.”

Maineiacs will be back on the ice Friday morning with the goalies hitting the ice at 8am.
