Pirates announce upcoming schedule

Portland, ME – The Portland Pirates announced yesterday their schedule for the upcoming 2009-’10 season, which will begin on Oct. 3 with a road game against the Springfield Falcons.

Pirates logo Portland will play eight of their first 12 games on the road to start the season and won’t open their home schedule until Oct. 10 when they take on their rivals, the Providence Bruins. In fact, the Pirates will load up with games on the road in the first half of the season, playing 24 of 40 games away from the friendly confines of the Civic Center.

The Pirates longest stretch away from the Civic Center will be a pair of eight day excursions, once in December and again in January.

As part of the announcement by the Pirates, they will play four games at neutral sites, with a pair of games at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston and in Buffalo, NY at HSBC Arena, the home of the Pirates’ NHL parent club, the Buffalo Sabres.

The first of those games will take place on Nov. 11 at HSBC Arena when the Pirates battle the Rochester Americans for the first time since 2001. Unfortunately, the Americans won’t make the trip to Maine as the second game at HSBC Arena will also be against Rochester on Sunday, Mar. 7.

Pirates’ fans in Lewiston will have an opportunity to see the Providence Bruins as they will play at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Dec. 4 and then a chance to potentially see former Lewiston Maineiacs goalie Jonathan Bernier on Sunday, Mar. 21 as the Manchester Monarchs roll into town.

Other notes on the season will see the Pirates face some uncommon travel characteristics as they will make five long-mileage road trips this season. They will also play nine games in 16 days in November, yet only play two games in the span of 12 days, ending with the traditional New Year’s Eve game on Dec. 31st.

The Pirates will play an 11am game on Feb. 2 against Manchester, as part of the eight times this season where the Pirates will have start times before 4pm.

For the first time in three season, the Pirates will end the season at home as they take on Lowell and Worcester to wrap up the 2009-’10 campaign.
