Jeanneret distinct flair is what Portland needs

Today, the Portland Pirates announced that Mark Jeanneret has joined the organization as the Director of Communications and Team Services as well as handing the play-by-play duties for the team.

Jeanneret is replacing former announcer Greg Glynn, who resigned from the club at the end of July to take a position closer to home due to health issues with his back.

For Jeanneret, he’s coming to Portland after spending the last 12 years with the Erie Otters of the OHL and brings an impressive resume with him to his new home, the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Those who have heard the 41-year old call games for the Otters, understands that he brings a distinct flair in the play-by-play booth. There isn’t a middle ground with Jeanneret. You either love him or hate him, but nobody can dispute his passion for the game.

Some might even recognize the voice as well as the last name. Yes, Mark is the son of long time Buffalo Sabres play-by-play announcer Rick Jeanneret. The senior Jeanneret has become an iconic figure in the play-by-play booth in the NHL with the Sabres. He’s known for his famous goal calls such as the ones for Brad May, Pat Lafontaine goal and many others. Click the link to here TSN’s Top-10 Rick Jeanneret calls.

Frankly, that’s what Portland needs… Someone with a little flair and while Mark isn’t his father, if he can bring a little enthusiasm to the radio dial, then it’s been an amazing success. It’s not up to me or anyone else to tell him how to do the job. If he wants to call the games with a peg leg and an eye patch, so be it. He’s going to sell the Pirates brand and from what I’ve heard in Erie, he will do a fine job.

Well, it was too good to be true or maybe it was wishful thinking on my part, but Brandon “Sugar” Sugden has signed with the Hershey Bears. It just adds another piece to the puzzle for the Bears as they try to repeat as Calder Cup Champions.
