Andrews turns down Maine

Halifax, NS– Brent Andrews who committed to Maine has decided to bypass the NCAA route and head to Halifax. The Mooseheads traded up into the first round to select Andrews earlier this month.

The 15-year-old who spent the year with the Cornwall Superior Thunder of the New Brunswick-Prince Edward Island said player development played a factor in his decision.

“Yes the Mooseheads have a good history on developing players,” says Brent Andrews. “It was helpful in the decision.”

“We are excited to have Brent coming to camp” stated Cam Russell, Mooseheads Head Coach and General Manager in the team’s press release. “Brent will be a big part of a talented group of young players we have assembled moving forward.”

He believes being on the ice every day will help his development in the long run.

“I would be on the ice every day with Halifax opposed to a couple times a week in Jr.A,” Andrews said. “I will be able to develop more at the Major Junior level.”

Although Andrews didn’t say playing closer to home was a factor, he did say he only consider playing Junior “A” hockey with the Summerside Western Capitals.

“If I was drafted (into the) MJAHL it would only make a difference if I was drafted to Summerside,” Andrews said on Friday.

Summerside is a mere forty minute drive to Andrew’s home in Hunter River, Prince Edward Island. He will now trave three and a half hours to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Andrews won’t listen to his critics who believed there was a deal under the table in place.

“As for people saying there was a deal, thats their opinion,” Andrews mentioned. “I always belived that if I was going to play in the Q, I would want to play in Halifax.”

He told the Mooseheads he was heading the NCAA route a few days before the QMJHL Draft.

“Halifax phoned me a few days before the draft saying that they wanted to pick (me) and wondered if I would report.” said Andrews. “I said my intentions were still to (the) NCAA (route), but if there was a team in the Q that I would maybe play, it would be Halifax.”

The Halifax Mooseheads travel to Lewiston on Wednesday January 27th, 2010.

Ashley is Excited to be drafted by Summerside

Darcy Ashley who was selected by the Summerside Western Capitals in Saturday’s MJAHL Draft is pleased to be heading to Summerside.

“My father played with the Capitals for four years when he played junior, and I know the organization very well,” said Ashley. “There was always a good relationship with the Capitals.”

He will be in a Summerside uniform next season
