Former Pirate facing possible jail time

Portland, ME – Former Pirate goaltender David McKee, 25, has found himself in hot water with the law as he appeared in Orange County District Court yesterday after being charged with raping an intoxicated and unconscious woman in her Newport Beach home after a night of drinking in a nearby bar.

McKee has been charged with one felony count of rape of an unconscious person and one felony count of rape by intoxication and faces a maximum of eight years in state prison if convicted.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s press release, the incident happened on July 12, 2006 while McKee was a member of the Portland Pirates, former affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks. McKee was attending a summer rookie camp in Anaheim and spent the night at Woody’s Wharf in Newport Beach with a group of male friends for drinks and meeting 25-year-old Jane Doe. After the bar closed, McKee is accused of going to Jane Doe’s Newport Beach apartment with a group of men and women. Jane Doe, who was intoxicated, went into her bedroom alone to go to sleep.

At approximately 4:15 a.m. on July 13, 2006, McKee is accused of going into Jane Doe’s bedroom and raping her while she was unconscious and unable to resist due to her intoxication. Jane Doe woke up during the sexual assault. Jane Doe immediately contacted the Newport Beach Police Department, who investigated this case. McKee was indicted by the Grand Jury on May 11, 2009.

McKee is out of custody on $100,000 bail and is scheduled for pre-trial on July 10, 2009.

McKee only played seven games for the Portland Pirates during the 2006-’07 season after the Irving, TX native signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks.
