Pirates release six dates for the 2009-’10 season

Portland, ME – The Portland Pirates announced today that the team has received confirmation from the American Hockey League for six dates on the team’s 2009-10 regular season schedule. This season, the Pirates will begin their 17th season and their second as the proud affiliate of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. The Pirates home opener will take place in just 126 days on Saturday, October 10th at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Saturday night home game marks the return and kick off of Labatt Blue Light, Saturday Night is Hockey Night. This season, all Saturday night Pirates home games will feature great promotions and Labatt Blue drink specials at local restaurants and pubs all season long.

As part of today’s announcement, the Pirates have released the following six guaranteed home dates for the 2009-10 season:
Saturday, October 10th
Saturday, October 31st
Friday, November 6th
Thursday, November 12th (HSBC Arena, Buffalo, NY)
Thursday, December 31st
Saturday, January 23rd

“We are very pleased with the six early dates we have received from the league. We are again proud to host Kids New Year’s, as well as return to HSBC Arena. We are also excited about once again scheduling a game on Halloween, which should provide a unique and fun atmosphere for fans of all ages,” said Pirates Managing Owner/CEO Brian Petrovek.

For the 2009-10 season, the Pirates have lowered ticket prices and re-scaled the seating bowl at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Full season, half season and flex plans are on sale now with some ticket plans featuring a savings of 25% off the 2008-09 prices. Group tickets are also on sale now and can be purchased for any of the five announced dates at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The Portland Pirates six confirmed dates are highlighted by the Home Opener on Saturday, October 10th when the Pirates will introduce a new “Treasure Chest” promotion, giving fans of all ages a chance to win great Pirates prizes. After the game, fans will receive an official Portland Pirates 2009-10 magnetic schedule.

For the 15th consecutive season, the Pirates and Q 97.9 will host Kids New Year’s on Thursday, December 31st. Following the game, the Pirates will continue one of Portland’s longest standing traditions by hosting the largest, most spectacular indoor fireworks display in the Northeast. Last year, the game drew a crowd of 6,374 fans. As a result of the event’s popularity, the game has sold-out four of the last six years.

After a successful first trip to Buffalo last season, the Pirates have planned two games at HSBC Arena (home of the Buffalo Sabres) in 2009-10. The first of two games will take place on Thursday, November 12th. Last season, the Pirates hosted the Albany River Rats in front of 11,144, the largest crowd to ever witness a Pirates home game. The second game at the HSBC Arena will be announced at a later date.

For the first time since 2004, the Pirates will also host a game on Halloween on Saturday, October 31st. Plans are already underway for costume contests and other trick-or-treating activities! The Pirates Halloween Bash, in partnership with Q 97.9, will be the largest costume party in Portland and feature fun events for the entire family.

The Pirates have also announced the return of bobbleheads in 2009-10. The series of three bobbleheads begins on November 6th with a Pirates Nathan Gerbe bobblehead sponsored by Bath Savings Institution.

The second half of the season heats up with the second of three bobblehead nights on Labatt Blue Light, Saturday Night is Hockey Night on Saturday, January 23rd featuring a Tim Kennedy bobblehead. This game will include Junior Achievement and the Casco Bay High School. The 2009-10 season marks the fifth season the Pirates have partnered with the Casco Bay High School to help present one of the Pirates home games at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Over the past four seasons, the Pirates have helped raise over $20,000 for the Casco Bay High School. Again this season, the Junior Achievement’s Company Program will continue to serve as the model around which the Pirates and the students from Casco Bay High School will gain a better understanding about running a business by actually running the Pirates game that night.

Opponents and start times for these games will be announced when the complete 2009-10 American Hockey League schedule is released later this summer. The AHL will again serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams when its 74th season gets underway on Friday, October 2.

Information about the Pirates promotions schedule and the 2009-2010 Labatt Blue Light Saturday Night is Hockey Night Series will all be announced at a later date and prior to the sale of individual game tickets. Individual game tickets for the 2009-2010 season go on sale in on Friday, September 25th.

Plans are underway for an All-Star Season! The Portland Pirates will host the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic on January 18th and 19th, 2010.
