The Sabres are very Generous to the Pirates

Portland, ME – The Portland Pirates defense is starting to build back some valuable depth as they make a final push toward the Calder Cup playoffs.

Matt Generous was signed to an ATO yesterday and was on the ice for the Pirates when they practiced at Portland Ice Arena this morning. He’s also signed a one-year entry-level deal with the Sabres, which will take effect next season.

Generous, 6-3, 195-pounds, played four seasons with St. Lawrence University, scoring 18 goals 38 assists for 56 points in 139 games. After finishing his senior season, he received postseason honors as the ECAC’s Outstanding Defensive Defenseman.

Pirates’ head coach Kevin Dineen wasn’t sure when he’d get into the lineup, but having him with the Pirates would not only benefit him, but the organization by providing the depth every team enjoys at this time of the season.

“We need to evaluate where he’s at right now,” said Dineen. “That’s something that you can never have enough of is depth on the blueline. The trick is not to let people sit around doing nothing.”
