Little surprise in Pirates Clear Day roster

Portland, ME – The Portland Pirates released their Clear Day roster on Thursday afternoon and there were few surprises.

As mentioned yesterday on Maine Hockey Journal, the Pirates traded Aaron Slattengren to the Binghamton Senators for defenseman Geoff Waugh.

It wasn’t a move that Pirates head coach Kevin Dineen wanted to make, but rather it was a move made out of necessity due injuries that have hampered Portland for most of the season.

“He was a guy I signed this year and I kind of looked at it as my guy,” said Dineen. “He did exactly what we asked of him and he will be sorely missed.”

“This was a deal we had little choice in making with our injuries on defense.”

The Pirates also signed Kenny MacAulay to a standard player’s contract, releasing him from his PTO.

MacAulay joined the Pirates in late January from the Stockton Thunder and was an ECHL All-Star for the second straight season. In 20 games with the Pirates, he scored one goal, four assists for five points with a plus-1 rating.

“He provides a good amount of speed and skates well out of the zone,” said Dineen. “He got good vision on the ice and has been an asset for us.”

Every year, the AHL announces a Clear Day roster for each of their respective clubs, consisting of a maximum of 22 players. According to AHL by-laws, only those players listed on a team’s Clear Day roster are eligible to compete in the remainder of the 2008-09 AHL regular season and in the 2009 Calder Cup Playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension.

Teams may also add signed junior players or players on amateur tryout contracts, only after their respective junior or college seasons are complete.

Currently, the Pirates have four players on the Clear Day, who are injured and is not expected not going to compete with the Pirates this season. Defenseman Mike Weber underwent shoulder surgery to repair a separation. He’s been told by medical staff that he is done for this season. Mike Card and Mike Funk have dealt with multiple concussions this season and their return is also unlikely.

Goaltender Adam Dennis suffered a hip flexor injury and underwent surgery back in January. He’s still recovering from the surgery and may not hit the ice til this summer.

The only player currently physically able to join the Pirates is Chris Butler, who is currently on recall to the Sabres. He was sent down by the Sabres last week as a paper transaction to make his eligible to play for Portland at some point during the remainder of this season.
