Breaking news is no news for the Pirates

Portland, ME – The Portland Pirates opted to have a day off, which is little surprising considering it was a scheduled practice this morning at Portland Ice Arena.

Obviously, with today being trade deadline day in NHL, it’s considered a national holiday in Canada with TSN and Sportsnet live all day like a Jerry Lewis Telethon.

I’m sure for some in the Pirates locker room it’s a stressful day as there are potentially several players who could find themselves in other cities by 3pm this afternoon.

I know the Pirates are wishing that Buffalo would pull a defenseman out of the hat as they are down to four healthy defensemen as Mike Weber is scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday in Buffalo.

“Yeah, he’s done for the season,” said Pirates head coach Kevin Dineen after Tuesday’s practice. “His is back in Buffalo and is scheduled for surgery on Thursday. We’ll have to move on without him.”

The Sabres are expected busy at the trade deadline, but it remains to see how it will affect the Pirates roster. The Sabres have already made one small move by signing Tim Connolly to a two-year deal worth 4.5 million per season. Maxim Afinogenov, Henrik Tallinder and Ales Kotalik have all been mentioned as possible players to be moved by 3pm today.

Stay tuned to Maine Hockey Journal through out the day for news on the Buffalo Sabres and Portland Pirates.
