Pirates defense takes another blow

Portland, ME – Once again the Pirates defense has taken a severe blow as Pirates head coach Kevin Dineen indicated after morning practice that defenseman Mike Weber would be done for the season due to a separated shoulder. He is scheduled to have surgery on Thursday, end his season and leaving the Pirates down yet another defenseman.

This only further proves that Buffalo needs to make some sort of a deal to bring some defensive depth into the organization and more importantly get a d-man who can help Portland.

The Pirates only had four regular defensemen on the ice as Mike Kostka, Marc-Andre Gragnani, Paul Baier and Kenny MacAuley took part in the morning session. Matt Macdonald is out with what Dineen called a maintenance day and should return tomorrow, but he wasn’t in a position to guarantee anything.

It was interesting see Pirates’ assistant coach Eric Weinrich in full gear skating with the team on the blueline as we’ve seen this story play out before, but Dineen and Weinrich indicated that he was just filling a gap on the blueline and he wasn’t attempting a comeback.

Kyle Rank also skated on the blueline. Dineen wanted to get him back on the ice skating after he’s been out for a week with a leg injury.
