Southern Maine looks toward ECAC playoffs

Gorham, ME — Junior Chris Travis (Scituate, Mass.) scored on a breakaway at 3:23 of overtime to give the University of Southern Maine a 4-3 victory over Saint Anselm College in an ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Men’s East game Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.

The win on the final day of the regular season for the Huskies gets them back to the .500 mark at 11-11-3 overall and 8-8-3 in the league. The Hawks slip to 9-14-1 overall and 6-12-1 in league games.

Travis split the Saint Anselm defense to receive a pass from sophomore Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) at center ice. Travis skated in on senior goalie Pat Gallagher (Framingham, Mass.), gave him a couple of fakes and slid the puck between his legs for his 14th goal of the season.

Saint Anselm forced the game into the extra session, rallying from a two-goal deficit in the third period despite being out shot 18-8. Sophomore John Penny (Andover, Mass.) cut the deficit in half at 6:54, and classmate Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass.) get the equalizer at 18:46 as Gallagher was headed for the bench for the extra attacker.

Southern Maine jumped out to a 2-0 in the first period on goals from seniors Dan Gordon (Lynnfield, Mass.) at 9:00 and Kyle Smith (Auburn, Maine) at 11:03. Smith’s goal came while the Huskies enjoyed the man advantage.

The teams traded power-play goals late in the second period to go to the dressing rooms at 3-1 after 40 minutes. Senior Tom Kerwin (Whitman, Mass.) got the Hawks on the board at 13:52 while the visitors enjoyed a two-man advantage. Gordon tallied his second of the game potting the rebound of Conter’s shot at 16:19.

Gordon finished the Senior Day contest with two goals and an assist for USM. Smith and Travis each a goal and an assist while Conter and sophomore Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) had two assists apiece. Sophomore Ryan Butler (Arlington, Mass.) and senior Mike Nunzianto (Guilford, Conn.) each had two assists for Saint Anselm.

Gallagher played well in a losing effort stopping 32 shots. USM senior Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine) finished the game with 27 saves.

Southern Maine will move into the ECAC East quarterfinals next Saturday against New England College at Henniker, N.H.
