Live Game Blog — Portland vs. Albany @ HSBC Arena

Buffalo, NY — This is living, if I must say so. The last couple of days in Buffalo has been amazing and I hope this becomes a yearly event for Portland because the Sabres have put on a first-class show. As was mentioned this morning, the Pirates are going with 13 forwards and 5 defensemen as Cliff Loya is out for the season with a broken leg. He stayed behind in Hershey to have surgery and will return to his hometown, Pittsburgh, PA.

7:08pm — In a little bit of a surprise, Dineen didn’t start with Darche, Kennedy and Gerbe, instead going with Mancari, Zagranpan and Slattengren.

7:11pm — Portland is leading 1-0 on a goal by Nathan Gerbe, which should make the hometown crowd very happy.

7:14pm — Just like that it’s 1-1 as Nick Dodge found the back on net from in front of the crease, connected on Tim Conboy pass from right face off circle.

7:20pm — We just had our first fight of the game as Jimmy Bonneau and Brad Herauf went for a pretty good tilt at center ice. The decision has to go to Bonneau, who landed several roundhouse shot to Herauf. Bonneau’s gone off with a cut over the eye…. From up in the pressbox it didn’t look too serious.

7:39pm — We just had rounds 2 through 5 as Nathan Gerbe, Mark Mancari and most of the Pirates were involved in a fight at the Rats bench. Nathan Gerbe was mugged by Tim Conboy and several punches were thrown from the Rats bench and somebody jumped off the Pirates bench, but was tackled by the linemen. This would have never happened if referee Jamie Koharski called Conboy for a rough penalty earlier when he tackled Gerbe to the ice. Albany knows he’s a scoring threat and one has to wonder if this was a target plan.

7:45pm — This is absolutely bush league hockey by the River Rats and it’s a shame too. They have the talent to play and beat the Pirates. They did it on Saturday in Glens Falls. Nathan Gerbe has been given a game misconduct,. which raises a few eyebrows considering he was the one getting mugged by Conboy and he only gets a 10 minute misconduct.

Shots are 8-8 after once period of play. With 25 seconds left in the period a whole slew of action took place between Portland and Albany, but one as to think that Albany got off lightly in the end. Dineen should have a fair amount to say after the game. The Pirates lost Tim Kennedy and Tyler Bouck to 10 minute misconducts. Nathan Gerbe was given a game misconduct, which is just beyond belief.

8:11pm — The Pirates are on a 5-on-3 as Casey Borer took a holding penalty just 28 seconds into the game.

8:15pm — Portland is getting another penalty as Ryan Westin is off for hooking at 5:54 of the period. Portland is 1-for-4 so far in the game.

8:18pm — The Pirates fail to score on their pp attempt and the Rats are now on one of their own as Slattengren was just called for charging the goalie in the crease. (somebody look at the replay and tell how that was a penalty?? REALLY??)

8:24pm — Albany takes a 2-1 lead as Michael Ryan beat Enroth on a partial breakaway flipping the puck over his shoulder. Now the Pirates are going to be a man down as Matt Macdonald goes for tripping.

8:33pm — Portland tied the game at 2-2 with 1:45 left in the game on a nice goal by Tim Kennedy. Michael Ryan not happy slashed Kyle Rank. Another fight broke out as it’s apparent Koharski lost control of the game. Albany isn’t playing nice anymore and Bonneau needs to be out a lot in the third period.

8:37pm — Conboy was at it again as he tackled Bouck during the fight. Bouck, Rank, Conboy and Ryan all recieve 10-minute misconducts.

Attendance was announced as 11,144 are at HSBC Arena to watch the game tonight. It’s a Pirates new all-time attendance record for one game as the previous record was back in 1995 (7,420). As much as I’d like for this to hold the record… This game should have an asterisk next to it because it’s not in the 4-C’s.

9:04pm — Albany regained the lead as Nick Dodge was given credit for a goal that was either tipped or it deflected of Enroth into the net.

9:15pm — It’s been a trade off of penalties as the Pirates are killing off a penalty by Gragnani.

9:22pm — The Pirates are on the PP as Jerome Samson was called for holding with less than five minutes in the game.

9:28pm — With 29.6 seconds left in the game the Pirates scored the tying goal. Zach Tarkir took a shot from the point, beating Peters under the crossbar. They announced the goal was credited to Kyle Rank so it he must have tipped past Peters.

The game was certainly a disappointment to Portland, but in the big scheme of things Portland did take four of six points on the road trip and can head back to Portland still in the division hunt.

The topic of discussion was on Gerbe getting tossed more than the play of the Pirates.
