Pirates buzzing in Buffalo

Buffalo, NY — Except for the drive to Buffalo from Hershey – I didn’t arrive til 5:30am – the day was just as advertised for the Portland Pirates as the prepared for tomorrow’s game against the Albany River Rats at the home of the Pirates’ NHL parent club, the Buffalo Sabres.

There was an excitement in the air at the arena. It was nothing more than a simple practice, but the local media showed up in droves as all the television and print media was on hand to check out possible future Sabres, making it anything, but normal.

The buzz was around the obvious cast of players, such as Jhonas Enroth, Nathan Gerbe, Tim Kennedy and Marek Zagrapan. The players are really looking forward to the game as it’s expected over 12,000 could be in attendance for the game.

For Kennedy and Whitmore, they are playing in front of a hometown crowd (more on that tomorrow) as many family and friends will fill into HSBC Arena. That will only add to buzz of the atmosphere at the game, tomorrow.

From the Pirates prospective, there weren’t many changes to the lineup, as they will most likely dress 13 forwards and 5 defensemen for the game. Mancari is the apparent choice to see some time on the blueline.

It some good news for the Pirates on the health of the club, Paul Baier and Colin Murphy are close to returning and could be back as soon as this weekend. According to Dineen, Mike Funk has made great strides in the last couple of weeks and it’s not out of the possibility that he could be back early next month.
