Blue Devils win an ugly one

Winslow, ME– It wasn’t pretty but the Lewiston Blue Devils defeated Messalonskee 4-0 in Eastern Class A action on Thursday night. Lewiston struggled early on.

“We have a tendency to come out slow. We have to chance that if we want to get the level that we want to be at,” said Lewiston Head Coach Jamie Belleau.

After Messalonskee’s Dustin Veillux went to the box with 2:44 remaining in the first, Lewiston’s Robbie Leeman potted his seventh goal of the regular season 11 seconds later. Before the period ended, Sam Cloutier jammed the puck home.

The second saw no scoring and Messalonskee’s Nate Delgiudice played the big role. The freshman goaltender made key saves to keep his team within striking distance.

“There goaltender was very strong tonight and he made a lot of very good saves. We knew that coming in. Give credit to our boys who didn’t give up,” said Belleau.

The Eagles came out strong in the third period but couldn’t get anything past Dylan Labonte. The senior netminder received the start after Cam Poussard made the start against Falmouth on Monday.

“We have two top quality goaltenders and we have confidence in both of them. He (Labonte) got some shots and made a couple of good saves early in the game,” said Belleau. Labonte made ten saves in the victory.

Ben McDonough factored in both goals in the third period. At the 7:17 mark, he found the back of the net for the seventh time this season. Desmond Gagne picked up the lone assist. McDonough would then find sophomore Ben Wigant who lit the back of the net with 4:51 remaining.

The Blue Devils travel to Biddeford on Saturday to take on the Thornton Academy Trojans. The Trojans are 5-2 in league play.

“We are pleased so far with the week that we have had. We tied Brewer (Friday), we beat Falmouth (Monday), and we won this game. We will have our hands full with Thornton and we will have to come ready to play. We will have to put three full periods together,” said Belleau.

The Messalonskee Eagles will host Skowhegan on Saturday.

In first game of the high school double header, Greely defeated Winslow 9-4 in Class B action.
