Gerbe returns to Portland

Portland, ME – As was expected, the Buffalo Sabres have assigned Nathan Gerbe to the Portland Pirates, Sabres’ AHL affiliate.

Gerbe returning to the Pirates is certainly a welcome addition with the rash of injuries to Portland, a team who has lost 98-man games this season. Gerbe’s return will also restore the Pirates top-line of Darche, Kennedy and Mancari, as Gerbe will be reunited with Zagrapan, giving Portland a couple of scoring options – something they haven’t had as of late.

Gerbe was recalled back on Dec. 6 after the Pirates, 3-2, shootout loss over the Springfield Falcons.

In six games with the Sabres, he’s scored one assist with a plus-3 rating. He also missed six games with an upper body injury, playing one game in his return.

Prior to his recall to the Sabres, he played in 21 games with the Pirates, scoring 24 points (14g, 10a) and with plus-3 rating.

Gerbe led all AHL rookies in scoring, assists and points before going to Buffalo.
