Wigant leads the Blue Devils

Portland, Me– After suffering a devastating loss to their archrival on Saturday in league play. The Lewiston Blue Devils took on Hamden, Connecticut in the Maine High School Hockey Invitational. Ben Wigant scored both of Lewiston goals in the 2-1 victory.

“We were working hard and for the most part taking reasonability for each of our players on the ice,” said Lewiston head coach Jamie Belleau.

Lewiston would get on the board first at the 4:12 mark. After a scramble in front of the net, Ben Wigant was the last player to touch the puck. The Blue Devils would get a too many men on the ice penalty at the 7:05 mark. Hamden fired shots on Cam Poussard but he was a stone wall in net.

“We expect that from Cam. Cam is a good goaltender and certainly he made some big saves. Cam played a heck of a game but so did the rest of the kids around him,” said Belleau. “Their goaltender came up big,” said Bill Verneris the Hamden head coach.

Lewiston would go on their first powerplay with 5:21 remaining when Joe Coughlin was called for roughing. The Blue Devils couldn’t find the back of the net. Brandon Lebrun would sit for two minutes for hooking with 2:56 left in the first. Hamden went 0 for 2 on the powerplay.

All the action in the second came at the end of the stanza. Robbie Leeman would go to the sin bin at the 11:13 mark roughing. Hampden would capitalize when Mike Pierne getting the goal after it appeared to go off Lewiston defenseman Cody Dessault. Josh Teulings would get the lone assist.

Wigant would come through again with 50 seconds left when he found the top shelf. Leeman tallied the lone assist.

Hampden would fight to the last seconds. They continued to apply pressure in the third. Poussard stayed strong as he was crashed into the net. The physical play also picked up. Hamden had an offensive faceoff with less then 15 seconds in the game.

“The biggest problem this season is been finishing. It proved to be the Achilles heel tonight. Overall it was a good hard fought game” said Verneris.
