Bowdoin heading to final in Salem Holiday Classic

Salem, Mass. – Using a 52-21 shot advantage, the Bowdoin College men’s ice hockey team cruised to a 5-1 win over Salve Regina in the opening round of the Salem State Holiday Classic on Saturday. The Polar Bears take their second victory over the Seahawks this season and improve to 6-1-1 as Salve Regina drops to 2-9-2 overall. Bowdoin will play the winner of Saturday’s late game between the host Vikings and Penn State at 7:00 p.m. Sunday.

The teams traded early goals courtesy of Bowdoin’s Jeff Fanning and Salve’s Ryan Petersen. First-year Jordan Lalor netted a goal late in the period to give the Polar Bears a 2-1 advantage after one period. Colin MacCormack extended the lead to 3-1 with a second-period goal before third period tallies from Ryan Blossom and Erik Olson sealed the victory for the Polar Bears.

Nick Smith made 20 saves for Bowdoin while Salve’s Pat Enloe made 47 stops. Bowdoin defeated Salve Regina 10-1 in the team’s earlier meeting on November 28.
