Polar Bears win Bowdoin-Colby Faceoff Classic

Brunswick, ME — The Bowdoin College men’s ice hockey team used a trio of second-period goals en route to a 4-2 victory over UMass-Dartmouth in the Bowdoin-Colby Face-Off Classic on Saturday. The Polar Bears win the Classic with a 2-0-0 overall mark and improve to 3-0-1 overall this season. The Corsairs went 1-1-0 in the tournament and drop to 5-2-1.

Colby and Salve Regina both finished 0-1-1 in the tourney after skating to a 3-3 draw in Saturday’s early game.

The Polar Bears out-shot the Corsairs 9-5 in the opening period but failed to find the back of net. Bowdoin broke through in the second period immediately following a UMass-Dartmouth powerplay. An offensive push by Bowdoin saw Jeff Fanning rifle a shot that went wide and richoted off the boards to Mike Collins behind the cage. Collins flicked the puck towards the mouth of the net, only to have it bounce off the back of Corsair netminder Jon Dryjowicz-Burek and into the goal at 8:44.

Less than two minutes later, a Polar Bear powerplay resulted in another score, as a Matt Smith slapshot rebounded off of Dryjowicz-Burek’s pads to the waiting stick of Graham Sisson, who one-timed the loose puck into the net at 9:57. Colin MacCormack finished off a rush down the ice at 19:32 to round out the second period.

The Corsairs trimmed the Bowdoin lead to 3-1 when Giancario Capodanno ripped a low shot from the top of the right circle with 7:30 remaining. With under five minutes to play, Capodanno finished off another rush with a shot that slipped through the pads of Bowdoin’s Richard Nerland to cut the Bowdoin advantage to 3-2. With Dryjowicz-Burek pulled for an extra attacker, Ryan Blossom collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and sealed the win with a empty-net goal.

Nerland collected 23 saves in the win for Bowdoin. Dryjowicz-Burek stopped 29 shots for the Corsairs. Bowdoin sophomore defender Kyle Hanson was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

Bowdoin will return to action on Tuesday evening when they host Colby at 7:00 p.m.
