Westbrook blazes by EL

Lewiston, ME– For the first period in a half, it looked like it was a going to be the battle of the goaltenders. The Westbrook Blue Blazes turned up the heat as they defeated the Edward Little Red Eddies 7-2.

“He (Preston Peabbles) stepped up; I think down low shots it will be hard to beat him. He’s a great athlete and very mobile, this is the best we seen from him in two years,” said Westbrook Head Coach Tim Jalbert.

“Belanger played well, he made the key saves when he was suppose too. Their goalie played well,” said Edward Little’s Head Coach Craig Latuscha.

39 seconds into the game, Westbrook goes on the powerplay. The Blue Blazes were called for too many men on the ice at the 7:09 mark. With 4:10 remaining the Red Eddies go back on the powerplay. A minute into the powerplay, Westbrook takes another penalty. With two seconds left in the powerplay, Cody Russell of EL found the back of the net. Isaac Reed got the lone assist.

1:19 into the second, Westbrook goes back on the penalty kill. With 41 seconds left in the powerplay, EL goes to the box. 5:26 into the second period, Mat Gordon gave EL the 2-0 lead. Reed and Dylan Nadeau got the assists.

The Blue Blazes got on the board with 6:32 remaining. Moments later, Westbrook tied the game up with a goal from Justin Dube. Just under six minutes left in the second, EL goes to the sin bin. With 3:14 left, El goes back on the powerplay. With 16 seconds left, Devon Rodrigue made it 3-2 Blazes.

The Blue Blazes start the third on the powerplay. On the powerplay, Shayne Nealey made it 4-2, 1:33 into the stanza. At the 2:03 mark, EL goes on the powerplay. At the 2:59 mark EL goes on a 5 on 3 powerplay.

The Blue Blazes made it 5-2 with 8:08 left in the frame, Josh Caron got the goal with Rodrigue getting one assist and Tyler Rand getting the secondary assist. EL goes to the sin bin with 5:43 left in the stanza.

“We’ve been really focusing on conditioning; I keep telling the guys keep it close through two periods and time the third period comes around we will wear them down. That’s the difference, we had legs at the end,” said Jalbert.

EL takes two penalties at the 12 minute mark. With 2:38 remaining, the Blazers go to the box. 17 seconds later, Westbrook takes another penalty. With the two teams playing 3 on 3, Scott Heath made it 6-2. Tommy Lemay got the lone assist. Nine seconds later Josh Caron made 7-2. El goes to the sin with 49 seconds left.

“We fell apart discipline wise because we are a young team and inexperience. If they stay together as a team, we will be better off,” said Latuscha.
