Quick lead goes for not; Colby falls, 3-2

Waterville, ME — The Colby College men’s hockey team got off to a quick start, but University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, Mass.) made 42 saves, including 20 in a scoreless final period, as the Corsairs held on for a 3-2 victory over Colby College in the Colby/Bowdoin Face-Off Classic on Friday night at Alfond Rink.

UMass-Dartmouth (5-1-1) and Bowdoin will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday in Brunswick. Colby (2-2) will play Salve Regina in the earlier game at 2:30 p.m. Bowdoin took a 10-1 win over Salve Regina in the other game at Colby on Friday.

The Mules got off to a blazing start in taking a 2-0 lead just 5:58 into the contest. Michael Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) tallied on the power play off assists from Dan Nelson (Northbrook, Ill.) and Jesse Lehman (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) at 3:40 of the opening period. Wil Hartigan (Arlington, Mass.) made it 2-0 as Nelson picked up another assist along with captain Matt Strickland (Leduc, Alberta).

Colby took nine shots in the first period and beat Green twice, but that was it for the Mules offensively. Green stopped 15 shots in the second period and made a number of key saves among his 20 in the third period when Colby was on the power play.

Chris Shore (West Haven, Conn.) cut the Mules’ lead to 2-1 at 13:35 of the first period off a pass from Billy Manning (Stoughton, Mass.). Shore then tied the game at 4:34 of the second period off an assist from Nick Paquin (Warwick, R.I.).

The Corsairs’ Mike Owens (South Boston, Mass.) had an unassisted shorthanded goal at 18:35 of the second period for the game’s final score.

Cody McKinney (Weston, Fla.) stopped 28 shots in goal for Colby.
