Colby sweeps the weekend; beats Babson, 3-2

Waterville, ME — Colby College goaltender Cody McKinney (Weston, Fla.) came up big for the second day in a row with 34 saves as the Mules held on for a 3-2 victory over Babson College on Saturday at Alfond Rink.

Colby is 2-0 overall and 2-0 in NESCAC/ECAC East after taking two 3-2 victories to start the season. The Mules also won by the same score over University of Massachusetts at Boston when McKinney made 32 saves. Colby was outshot by the opponent by a 70-45 margin this weekend, but McKinney made 66 saves.

The Mules received two goals from another first-year player. After Michael Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) had a pair of goals in the win over UMass-Boston, Dan Nelson (Northbrook, Ill.) tallied twice on Saturday. He got the game-winning goal with just 1:06 to play in the second period to give the Mules the 3-2 lead.

Nelson tallied on the power play at 12:50 of the opening period off assists from captain Matt Strickland (Leduc, Alberta) and Jeoffrey Jarnot (Concord, N.H.).

Junior defensemen Mike White (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal at 15:51 of the first period with another power play goal. White, who has 12 career assists, received assists from Karl Burns (Mequon, Wis.) and Bobby Sullivan (Darien, Conn.).

Babson (0-2) made it 2-1 after one period when Brad Baldelli (Northboro, Mass.) scored with just 1:40 to play off passes from Mike Hoban (Medfield, Mass.) and Pat McLaughlin (Berlin, Mass.).

The Beavers tied the game at 2-2 on a power play goal by JT Balben (Wayland, Mass.) off an assist from Jason Schneider (Littleton, Mass.).

White and Matt Ahern (Melrose, Mass.) had the assists on Nelson’s second goal in the second period.

Colby will entertain Curry College at 7 p.m. Tuesday
