Another sweep for Maine

Providence, RI– The Maine Black Bears have won five straight as the defeated the Providence Friars 3-0. Gustav Nyquist continues to light the lamp as he scored twice. Tanner House got the game winning goal in the second. Scott Darling made 24 saves in the victory.

The Friars had a great chance early on as Mike Banwell went off for roughing at the 3:39 mark. Providence couldn’t get anything going with the man advantage. Just past the halfway mark of the period, David Cavanagh sat down for a few minutes for hooking. Maine had plenty of chances on that powerplay as they had three quality shots.

Maine went back on the powerplay when Ben Farrer went off for contact to the head. The penalty came with 5:22 remaining. The Black Bears went 0 for 2 on the powerplay in the first period. Maine would go on the man advantage with 33 seconds left when Matt Berglund was called for interference. The powerplay would carry over into the second.

The Black Bears came out slow in the second as they couldn’t get a shot on Justin Gates in the first minute and half. Lem Randall would go to the sin bin with 14:12 remaining for charging. Tanner House silenced the crowd with 11 seconds left in the powerplay. It was an unassisted effort.

In the third, the Friars went back on the powerplay when Kyle Solomon got called for hitting from behind, 2:17 into the stanza. Once again, someone forgot to tell Maine that they were on the penalty kill. Gustav Nyquist fired a shot past Justin Gates. It was another unassisted tally.

Matt Toarmina would sit with 11:06 remaining for holding. The Black Bears added pressure on Gates but Gates was able to keep it a 2 goal game. With 1:18 to go, Nyquist put the nail in the coffin on an even strength effort. Tanner House and Bryan Flynn grabbed the assists.

Scott Darling made 24 saves on 24 shots to get his second shutout of the year. Justin Gates turned away 33 shots on 36 chances. The Black Bears were 0 for 4 with the man advantage. Providence was 0 for 3.
