Jr. Pirates sweep the Leafs

It was another strong weekend for the Portland Junior Pirates AJHL squad. They had a tough start to the week when they lost to the Northern Cyclones on Wednesday 4-3. Ryan Boucher had a goal and an assist. Paul Kashmanian and Derek Tomes rounded out the scoring for the Pirates. Mike Tarajos had two assists, while Tyler Fleurent and Kevin Smith each had an assist.

They swept the Laconia Leafs this past weekend. On Saturday the Pirates squeezed by with the 4-3 victory. Connor Anthoine, Nick Cummings, Dan Smith, and Boucher tallied the goals. Jay Paradis had two assists. Bobby Hannah, Matt Crowley, Dan Smith, John Melancon, and Justin Clouatre added a helper.

Sunday, it was a 4-1 victory for the Pirates. Dustin Oberlander got the scoring started for the Pirates. His goal was followed by goals from Paul Kashmanian, Ryan Boucher and Bobby Hannah. Corey LaRue, Mike Tarajos, Tyler Fleurent, Dan Smith, Bobby Hannah, Jay Paradis, Connor Anthoine, and Russ Franey all tallied assists.

Nick Cumming was named the AJHL Defenseman of the Week.

The B Squad Wasn’t So Lucky

The Portland Junior Pirates MJHL squad was swept by the Hartford Junior Wolfpack 2-1 and 3-2. Saturday night, Evan Schultz got the Pirates lone goal with Elias Wissman and Cameron Cain tallying the assists.

The same combo got the Pirates first goal Sunday morning. Shawn Hird tallied the second goal with Patrick Webster and Tom Mills setting the goal up.

Long Weekend in Syracuse

The New Hampshire Junior Monarchs went 0-1-1 over the weekend against the Syracuse Stars. Saturday it was a 5-4 loss in overtime. Brian Dumoulin got the Monarchs on the board. Brian Billet, the Brunswick native made his EJHL debut and made 28 saves in the loss.

Sunday the Monarchs salvaged the 4-4 tie. Maine recruit, Adam Shemansky tallied an assist.

Auburn native Eric Bonawitz didn’t factor in the scoring for the Stars in either game.

Other Tidbits

2010 Maine recruit, Stuart Higgins had two goals this weekend. One goal in the 4-0 win over the Motor City Machine on Friday and 1 on Saturday for the National Team Development Program also against Motor City.
Last Wednesday, Derek Arnold recorded a hat trick for the Waterloo Blackhawks over fellow 2009 Maine recruit Mark Anthoine’s Chicago Steel. The Blackhawks defeated the Steel 6-2.

Joey Diamond had five points in three games this past week including a goal. He has 23 goals and 19 assists on the season in 20 games. He’s a 2009 recruit. Patrick McEachen had a three assists in two games this weekend. The defenseman has 2 goals and 15 assists in 21 games for the Stouffville Spirit.
