Lewiston couldn’t solve Nadeau

Charlottetown, PEI– Danick Paquette continued to be hot as he got another goal but this time he couldn’t pull it off on his own. The Prince Edward Island Rocket defeated the Lewiston Maineiacs 3-1, despite only having 16 shots on net. Rookie forward Ben Duffy got the eventual game winner 3:56 left in the first period. Mathieu Tousignant and Jean-Philippe Mathieu were the other goal scorers. Bobby Nadeau stopped 33 shots for the Rocket.

The Maineiacs got the first powerplay chance at the 2:38 mark as Michael Snow went off for two minutes. Dominic Savoie went to the box at the 5:36 mark. When he got out of the box, he skated in on Bobby Nadeau but shot it into Nadeau’s pads. Danick Paquette went to the sin bin with 11:04 remaining. The Rocket were able to get their first shot on Delmas in the game on the powerplay.

Marc Bourgeois had a chance with Maxime Gratchev streaking in. With 6:37 remaining, Mathieu Tousignant snapped one past Delmas. Assists went to Chris Doyle and Danick Malouin. Malouin would factor in on the second goal. He throw the puck on net but it deflected off of Ben Duffy’s skate and it went in with 3:56 to go. Simon Olsson got the secondary assist.

Denis Reul went off the ice in pain. Lewiston would go o the powerplay when Raphael Neiderer went off for two minutes. The Maineiacs couldn’t get anything going and went into the intermission down by two.

Reul returned back to the ice as he got the first shot on Nadeau in the second period. Lucas LaBelle and Brandon MacLean dropped the gloves. LaBelle was able to throw MacLean down to the ice pretty quickly and got a punch in before the referees broke it up. Simon Olsson fed Ben Duffy but couldn’t put the biscuit home.

The referees went upstairs to see if the Maineiacs stuffed the puck into the cage. The replay confirmed it was no goal. Alexander Beaton put a snap shot on Nadeau. Soon after, he was called for interference at the 5:52 mark. Prince Edward Island had a great chance when Delmas let the puck sit in the crease. The Maineiacs defense was able to clear the puck.

Maxime Gratchev fed Filip Janosik but Janosik couldn’t get good wood on the shot. Lucas LaBelle tried to wrap it in on the back hand but Nadeau was there to make the stop. Paquette was thrown into Nadeau net by Jean-Philippe Mathieu. Paquette threw his own punch and Nadeau got a shot in. Mathieu got the initial penalty but Paquette got a penalty along with Simon Olsson at the 10:45 mark.

Lewiston would go on the two man advantage when Lucas McKinley went off for slashing with 8:52 to go in the second period. Etienne Brodeur had the best chance on the two man advantage when he sitting on top of the crease. They couldn’t cut into Prince Edward Island’s lead. Matching roughing calls went against Dany Coulombe and Olsson at the 14:07 mark. Danick Paquette went to the sin bin with 3:53 remaining for boarding. Lewiston had a very good penalty kill to kill the penalty off.

Maxime Gratchev showed off his offensive instincts at the beginning of the third period. He got called for slashing 61 seconds into the stanza. Danick Paquette would get the Maineiacs within one with a short handed goal with Reul and Billy Lacasse getting the helpers, the tally came 1:49 into the stanza. The Rocket couldn’t regain the two goal lead on the powerplay. They held the puck in the offensive zone after Gratchev returned to the ice.

Lewiston went on the powerplay when Raphael Neiderer upended Lucas LaBelle at the 4:25 mark. The Maineiacs couldn’t set anything up in the offensive zone on the man advantage. PEI Rocket would go back up two goals when Jean-Philippe Mathieu snapped one past Delmas at the 6:52 mark. Duffy and Olsson got the helpers.

Paquette gets drilled from behind and Brandon MacLean went off for cross-checking with 6:23 to go. The powerplay struggles continued for the Maineiacs. Lewiston had a chance but the puck hit the crossbar. Ed Harding used his timeout with 2:19 left in the contest. Peter Delmas stayed on the bench. No real chances were created with the extra man on the ice but the Rocket couldn’t score on the empty net.

Lewiston outshot PEI 34-16. Peter Delmas made 13 saves while Bobby Nadeau turned away 33 shots. If the Maineiacs can take a moral victory out of this game, they didn’t allow a powerplay goal. The Rocket went 0 for 5 and Lewiston went 0 for 6. The three stars were:

Notes: Rookie defenseman Garrett Clarke sat for the second game in the row with an injury. Dany Coulombe took his place on the roster. Jonathan Connelly was the back up for the Maineiacs. Phillip Wright has been the primary back up this season.
