Pirates finish road trip on strong note

Norfolk, VA – It can be considered a successful road trip for the Portland Pirates, finishing their three-game swing through Connecticut and Virginia by taking five of six points. Pirates’ forwards Tim Kennedy, Mark Mancari and Mathieu Darche each had three points on the night as Portland defeated the Norfolk Admirals, 5-3, before a crowd of 3,438 at the Scope on Saturday night.

After being outshot 18-8 in the first period, the Pirates would get on the board first when Mancari scored with only six seconds left in the period. Darche and Kennedy were credited with assists on the play.

Defenseman Jay Rosehill tied things at 1-1 for the Admirals at 5:26 into the second period, snapping Pirates’ goalie Jhonas Enroth’s shutout streak at 85:17. It was just a night earlier when he earned his first AHL shutout against the Admirals.

The Pirates regained their lead on goals just 1:36 apart from Kennedy and Colton Fretter, giving the Pirates a 3-1 lead. Kennedy has scored goals in back-to-back games, extending his points-scoring streak to eight games.

At 17:55, Former Pirate Brandon Segal pulled Norfolk to within a goal.

Just 2:48 into the third period, Segal wasn’t done as he notched his second goal of the game, beating Enroth on a goal he wished he could have back as the Admirals tied the game at 3-3.

Mathieu Darche broke the tie at 6:51 of the third period on a goal assisted by Kennedy and Kostka.

At 11:47, the Pirates sealed the win as Felix Schutz scored his second goal of the season.

Enroth, getting his second consecutive start, made 35 saves in another impressive start for the Pirates, while at the other end, former Pirate goaltender Mike McKenna had a tough night stopping 25 shots for the loss.

The Pirates make the 12 hour drive back to Maine tonight and take tomorrow off before hitting the ice for practice on Tuesday. They will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Worcester, MA to battle against another division foe, the Worcester Sharks.
