Paquette leads the way for the Maineiacs

Bathurst, NB– The Captain led his troops to the 5-3 victory over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Danick Paquette had four goals on the night for the Lewiston Maineiacs. Peter Delmas made 30 saves in the win. Vincent Arseneau, Spencer Jezegou, and Jonathan Lessard were the goal scorers for the Titan.

Right after a face off in Lewiston’s zone, Vincent Arseneau slid a backhander past Peter Delmas. The helpers went to Olivier Jannard and Charles Vouligny 125 seconds into the contest. Maxime Gratchev skated around the net the puck found its way on Denis Reul’s stick and he fired one on net. It was a fight for the puck but Michael Ward stuffed it home to tie the game at the 5:46 mark. Gratchev got the lone assist.

Matt Bourdeau went off for high sticking at the 8:43 mark. Acadie-Bathurst had chances on their powerplay but it was cut short when Tomy Joly went off at the 10:12 mark. The Titan did a great job killing Lewiston’s powerplay when Bourdeau came out of the box. The Maineiacs did convert on the powerplay when Danick Paquette roofed it over Nicolas Champion. The tally came with 9:29 remaining. Eric Gelinas and Billy Lacasse set the goal up.

Paquette wasn’t done he snapped one past Champion for the second time in the matter of few minutes. His second goal came with 5:05 to go in the stanza. Alexander Beaton fed Paquette with the pass and Beaton was the only player to be rewarded with an assist. Frederick Piche relieved Champion of his duties after the third goal. Bathurst had a couple of chances at the end of the stanza.

Michael Ward gave Piche his first real action as he went end to end and snapped one into Piche’s bread basket. Lewiston had some pressure on Piche early on. Arseneau made some moves and fired a shot on Delmas. Delmas made a nice save to keep it a two goal game.

Michael Chaput went to the box 6:57 into the period. After getting some shots early on in the powerplay, the Titan struggled to keep the puck in Lewiston’s zone. After Chaput came out of the sin bin, Bourdeau let a blast go but Piche flashed the leather. Lucas LaBelle had a nice hit.

The Maineiacs applied more pressure on Piche and it caused the Titan to go a man down. Brad Tesink went to the sin bin with 8:08 remaining. Joly had a shorthanded opportunity but he couldn’t make the cross ice pass. Lewiston had a great chance to go up three goals as they crashed the net. Piche did everything to keep the biscuit out of the net. The Titan were able to kill off the penalty. Lewiston had another flurry of chances late in the second.

Paquette completed the hat trick with 23 seconds remaining. Beaton picked up his second assist. As soon the lamp went on Etienne Brodeur and Spencer Jezegou dropped the mitts. Jezegou wrestled Brodeur down. At the end of the period, players got together. No penalties were called.

The Titans had an early chance. Peter Delmas had to make a big stop. The Titan created a turnover and Drew Paris blasted it wide. Piche made a kick save on Paquette who was sitting right next to the crease. Maxime Gratchev created another offensive chance for the Maineiacs.

Peter Delmas cross checked Stefan Fournier. No penalty was called but Michael Ward went to the box with 11:15 to go. The Titan got within one with a powerplay goal from Jezegou at the 9:23 mark. Assists went to Paris and Cameron Critchlow. Pierre-Olivier Morin and Alexander Beaton had a chance to get the goal back but Piche stretched out to make the stop.

Piche made another big save. Danick Paquette went off with 5:25 remaining as he drilled a Titan. Peter Delmas felt the pressure but the penalty killers cleared the puck out. At the end of the powerplay the Titan almost had the game 4-3 but Delmas made the key save. When the game went back to even strength, the Titan were in control. Delmas made the first and second save but let the third shot in. Jonathan Lessard picked up his fifth of the season with 1:56 to go.

Morin had a great opportunity to get Lewiston back up by two goals. Piche left the net to give his team the extra man. With 48 seconds to go, Paquette got his fourth goal of the night as he potted the empty netter. Players exchanged words when the final buzzer sounded.

Peter Delmas turned away 30 of 33 shots. Nicolas Champion had an off night as he let in three goals on eight shots. Frederick Piche turned away 32 of 33 shots. Lewiston was 1 for 2 on the powerplay and Acadie-Bathurst Titan were 1 for 4 with the powerplay. The three stars were:

Maineiacs travel to Prince Edward Island tomorrow to face off against the Rocket at 3pm.
