Pirates make moves to solidify roster

Portland, ME – Re-enforcements have arrived in Portland for the Pirates as they prepare for a three game road trip over the next four days, beginning tonight in Hartford.

Joining the Pirates will be defenseman Matt MacDonald and forward Aaron Slattengren.

MacDonald played in the ECHL for the Cincinnati Cyclones, where he’s spent the last three seasons. The 6-1, 205-pound native from Niagara Falls, Ont has five points (1g, 4a) in four games with the Cyclones this season.

For Slattengren, this isn’t his first time in the AHL or in a Portland Pirates uniform as he spent five games with the Pirates in ’05-’06 and a large part of last season with the Providence Bruins where he scored 10 goals, 13 assists in 32 games. Prior to joining the Pirates, he was playing in Augusta, GA – former ECHL affiliate of the Pirates – where he had nine points (5g, 4a) in six games on the season.

Both players are joining the Pirates as a result of injuries that have struck the Pirates over the last several days. Pirates coach Kevin Dineen had been busy on the phones since yesterday afternoon trying to find bodies to insert in the line up after receiving news that Dylan Hunter and Tyler Bouck would be out of the lineup.

Hunter took a puck of his foot in Saturday’s game against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and didn’t return for the second and third period. He had x-rays on Monday, which revealed a broken bone in his left foot.

Dineen said it would keep him out for 4-to-6 weeks.

The Pirates will also be without their captain, Tyler Bouck, who is recovering from an infection from a previous injury, something Dineen said they want to keep a close eye on.

Going into the road trip this weekend, Portland knew they might be shorthanded on the blueline as Mike Weber was recalled to Buffalo on Monday due to an injury suffered by Henrik Tallinder and Mike Funk who is currently recovering from a concussion.

Funk is skating and did join the Pirates in the road trip, but will not play this weekend.
