Big weekend ahead for Jr. Pirates

The Portland Junior Pirates Junior A squad had a big weekend. On Saturday, they defeated the Laconia Leafs 4-1. Matt Crowley, Tyler Fleurent, Derek Tomes, and Connor Anthoine were the goal scorers. Dustin Oberlander, Dan Smith, Paul Kashmanian, Corey LaRue, Kevin Smith, Nick Cummings, and Bobby Hannah grabbed assists.
Sunday, they defeated the Boston Bulldogs 8-7.

The Junior B squad defeated the Troy Eagles 6-5 and 5-3 this weekend. On Saturday, the Pirates were led by Shawn Hird, who collected two goals and two assists. Deven Alves, Patrick Webster, Evan Schultz, and Paddy Murphy were the other goal scorers. Elias Wissman and Mike St. Denis had two assists, Murphy, Trevor Fleurent, William Strabley, Tom Mills, and Michael Herlihy added an assist.
Sunday Elias Wissman Paddy Murshy and Mike St. Denis led the way with a goal and an assist. Hird and Fleurent tallied the other goals. Deven Alves had two assists, Schultz, Scott Callahan, and Mills talled helpers.
The Under 16 Midget Team went 1-1 at the Beantown Classic. On Friday they lost to the South Shore Dynamos 6-1 but bounced back to defeat the Boston Junior Eagles 3-2 on Saturday.
The Monarchs Split at the Beantown Classic
They lost to Northwood Academy 4-1 but defeated Bridgton Academy 9-0.
Hooksett, NH – Jamie Ferullo recorded a hat trick and Pat Kiley had a 2 goal, 3 assist performance to pace the NH Monarchs to a 9-0 win over Bridgton Academy. Matt Mangene started the scoring just 3:52 into the game when he popped home a Mike Cornell feed. Less than 30-seconds later Mangene would take a pass from Cornell and feed Pat Kiley for his first tally of the night and the final goal of the period.
The Monarchs would really hit their stride in the second and outshoot the visitors by a 19-6 margin. Mangene, Kiley, Ferullo, and Kyle Beattie would strike with only Beattie’s goal being a special teams marker. Ferullo would capture his hat trick in the third with 2 goals, while Joel Jonsson would add the other goal.
All three Monarchs goaltenders, Nick Therrien (7 saves), Connor Shannon (6saves), and Pontus Hansson (9 saves) would see 20-minutes of action each with all three making several great saves preserving the combined shutout.
On Sunday they lost to South Shore 4-3. Brian Dumoulin had an assist in the lost.
Other News and Notes
Brian Billet (Brunswick, Maine) of the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs (EMJHL) made 14 saves on 16 shots in relieve duty in the 8-5 victory over Capital District. Nick Broadwater (Portland, Maine) is fifth in the Eastern Junior Hockey League with a 2.56 goals-against-average for the Boston Junior Bruins. He also has a .906 save percentage.
Eric Bonawitz (Auburn, Me), who played for St. Doms and Portland Junior Pirates, scored his first career goal in the EJHL this past weekend for the Syracuse Stars. The defenseman scored in the 10-2 victory over the Boston Jr. Shamrocks on Friday. He also has four assists in 14 games.
Maine recruit Derek Arnold notched his first career goal in the USHL on Friday night in the Waterloo 3-2 victory over the Lincoln Stars.
