Black Bears swept in weekend series against Northeastern

Orono, ME – The University of Maine Black Bears missed an opportunity to even their record, falling to Northeastern University, 2-1, in Hockey East action at Alfond Arena on Saturday night.
UMaine entered the game with a 1-2-0 record in the regular season and a 0-1 record in Hockey East, after dropping a 5-0 decision to Northeastern on Friday night.
The Black Bears would get on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead on a power play goal from Spencer Abbott at 18:11 of the first period. Josh Van Dyk, from the point, fired the shot on net, but Northeastern goalie Brad Thiessen couldn’t control the rebound as Abbott flipped the puck by for his first NCAA goal.
It would be Maine’s only goal of the game as Scott Darling and the Black Bears held on to a 1-0 lead for over 50 minutes.
At 9:02 of the third period, Northeastern snapped Darling’s shutout bid when Rob Rassey, in the crease, put the puck past Darling to tie the game at 1-1.
Northeastern would grab the lead late in the period when Ryan Ginand scored on a wrap-around with a backhand shot, beating Darling on the short side. It was Ginand third of the season.
Darling made 11 saves in the game in the loss. He falls to 1-1-0 on the season. While at the other end of the ice, Brad Thiessen stopped 26 shots in the win improving to 5-0-1
