Lewiston falls in game two

Victoriaville, QC– The old saying goes “you can’t win games in the first period but you can lose games in the first period.” For the Lewiston Maineiacs that was certainly the case as they allowed three goals in the first stanza. They did fight back in the second to get back within a goal but ultimately fell to the Victoriaville Tigres 4-2. The Tigres had four different goal scorers and Kevin Poulin made 30 saves. The Maineiacs were lead by their captain, Danick Paquette, as he had a shorthanded and a powerplay tally.

Garrett Clarke threw the puck into the stands and he was called for a delay of game 51 seconds into the game. Kevin Poulin turned over the puck behind his own net. Etienne Brodeur couldn’t control the puck as he had an open net. Maineiacs were able to kill off the rest of the penalty. The Tigres controlled the play for the first half of the period.

Billy Lacasse had the Maineiacs’ first scoring chance. The Victoriaville Tigres had a great scoring chance when a shot was fired from the right circle; Peter Delmas got a pad on it. Lacasse went to the box for cross checking at the 7:54 mark. The Tigres took advantage and Jonathan Bonneau made 1-0 off a rebound. Joel Chouinard got the lone helper at the 9:14 mark.

Lewiston would get their first powerplay when Ryan Jasinsky went off for roughing with 10:07 remaining. They had a great chance as they tried to stuff it past Poulin. Maineiacs couldn’t light the lamp on the man advantage. Lucas LaBelle went into the offensive zone a step too soon and was called for offsides. He had open ice and Poulin in front of him. Marc Bourgeois directed the puck just above the net. Billy Lacasse fed Bourgeois with a pass.

Dave Nolin fired a wrist shot that found the back of the cage. David Cliché and Kirill Tulupov got the assists on the play. The tally came with 1:23 left in the first period. Michael Chaput went off for cross checking with 1:10 remaining. Brandon Hynes made it 3-0 as he was left unattended in the slot with 31 seconds left. Philip-Michaël Devos and Travis McIsaac got the assists.

Before the period started the Maineiacs were called for a bench minor. Danick Paquette and Ed Harding were furious. Dominic Savoie served the minor. The Tigres went on a 5 on 3 powerplay for 21 seconds as Eric Gelinas went to the box for slashing. Dominic Savoie picked up the puck as he came out of the box and fed it to Paquette. Paquette snapped it past Poulin at the 2:09 mark. Savoie and Denis Ruel set the short handed tally up. McIsaac was all alone with Delmas but lost the puck.

Maineiacs went on the powerplay when McIsaac went to the sin bin. Lewiston couldn’t get anything going during the powerplay. Reul drilled a Vicroriaville player after a quick whistle. Danick Paquette laid out Antoine Laperrière. Laperrière went off for delay of game when the puck went out of play on the hit at the 8:12 mark. Paquette drew the penalty and got his team back within one. He made a nice deke and beat Poulin on the low side 61 seconds into the powerplay. Eric Gelinas was awarded the only assist.

Denis Reul and Ryan Jasinsky dropped the gloves after the puck was dropped at the 10:49 mark. Reul got the best shots in and took Jasinsky down. Jasinsky was sent off as he got a ten minute misconduct. Lewiston went on the powerplay when Brandon Hynes went off for two minutes with 6:35 left. Poulin left some rebounds for the taking but Lewiston couldn’t convert. Etienne Brodeur was called offsides as he split the defense. Michael Ward created a turnover but shot it into Poulin’s pads.

After getting very little offense going in the second, the Tigres put some pressure in the first minute of the third. Lewiston applied their own pressure soon after. Brodeur let a backhander go but it went wide. Sean Stagles went to the box for hooking at the 6:35 into the period. Victoriaville had some early pressure in the powerplay but after Paquette cleared the zone they couldn’t get anything going.

Victoriaville had a chance but Delmas was able to make the stop with eight minutes left in the game. Lucas LaBelle had his own chance thirty seconds later. Garrett Clarke let a blast go but Lewiston couldn’t stuff the rebound home. The Tigres had a great chance with 2:10 left. Lewiston called a timeout with 1:41 remaining. Just under a minute to go Andrej Nestrasil created a turnover and put the nail in the coffin.
