Huskies crash the party

Orono, ME– It wasn’t a great way to start homecoming weekend for the Maine Black Bears. The Northeastern Huskies didn’t roll over as they defeated the Black Bears 5-0. Brad Thiessen made 29 saves for his fifth career shutout. Joe Vitale and Steve Quailer had two assists in the victory. David Strathman had a goal and an assist for the Huskies. Dave Wilson made 16 saves for the Black Bears.

The Huskies got on the board after the Black Bears put some early pressure on Thiessen. Mike Hewkin found the back of the net as he let a shot go from the point. The helpers went to Wade MacLeod and Joe Vitale. The goal came at the 3:31 mark of the first stanza. At the 6:22 mark, Chris Donovan swept the puck past Dave Wilson. Dylan Wiwchar and Greg Costa picked up the assists. Rob Rassey gave Northeastern the 3-0 lead at the 7:56 mark. Steve Quailer got the assist. Freshman Spencer Abbott had a great scoring chance with 1:10 left. Drew Muench was called for hooking on the same play.

The powerplay carried over into the second for the Black Bears. They put pressure on early on as the Black Bears went on the 5 on 3 powerplay as Joe Vitale went off for inference. Maine went back on the powerplay at the 8:47 mark. Vitale went back to the box for the same infraction. Abbott had another scoring chance on the powerplay. Northeastern went on the offensive on the penalty kill as they made it 4-0 with a goal by Alex Tuckerman. The lone assist went to Steve Quailer.

Northeastern went on the powerplay 5:45 into the third. Keif Orsini went to the box. The Black Bears killed of their fourth powerplay but the Huskies lit the lamp at the 7:51 mark. David Strathman got his first on the season with Joe Vitale getting his second assist on the night. The Huskies went on the man advantage again with 9:29 remaining when Will O’Neil went to the box for elbowing. The Black Bears went on their own powerplay at the 13:18 mark. A tripping call was called against Dylan Wiwchar. Tanner House of the Black Bears went off for charging with 1:40 remaining. A mini brawl broke out after the buzzer sounded.

Both teams were unsuccessful on the powerplay. University of Maine was 0 for 7 and Northeastern was 0 for five. Brad Thiessen made 29 saves for the visitors. Dave Wilson turned away 16 of 21 shots.
