Connolly out; Could somebody be heading to Buffalo?

The season hasn’t started yet and the Pirates could find themselves shorthanded by game time.

According to the Buffalo News, Sabres coach Lindy Ruff addressed the media, after the Sabres 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens, about the ominous no-show of forward Tim Connolly.

Ruff said that Connolly suffered a hairline fracture in one of his vertebrae in his back, but he shouldn’t miss more than week. Speaking from experience, I think it’s safe to say that he’ll be gone for more than a week and now it poses the question.

Will anybody from Portland be recalled?

It’s hard to say, but I would guess that I wouldn’t be shocked to see a player recalled if they feel that Connolly will be out for more than what Ruff estimated in the press conference. The Sabres still have an extra forward with Connolly out, but I don’t envision them wanting to play Andrew Peters, Clarke MacArthur and Matt Ellis in every game. Again, won’t be shocked to see Mathieu Darche, Marek Zagrapan or Nathan Gerbe recalled tomorrow.

It’s a little bit of a shock because based on earlier reports, Connolly was going to be ready to go for the Sabres season opener against the Habs, but he wasn’t on the ice for warm-ups, introduction and was listed as a scratch for the game.

We’ll just have to wait-and-see what happens.
