Sabres claim Matt Ellis off waivers

Portland, ME – It appears the Sabres have made a move to replace the injured Paul Gaustad today as according to Rich Hammond, Buffalo claimed Matt Ellis off waivers from Los Angeles.

Gaustad jammed his right thumb last Sunday in a game against Minnesota. He underwent surgery on Monday to repair a torn ligament his thumb and will be out 3-to-4 weeks leaving the Sabres already thin up the middle.

Ellis, 6-1, 210-pounds, played 54 games in the NHL last season with Detroit and Los Angeles, scoring three goals, five assists for eight points with 26 penalty minutes. His last stint in the AHL was back in 2006-07 with the Grand Rapids Griffins, scoring 49 points (26g, 23a) in 65 games.

At the current moment, it’s unclear how this will impact the Pirates roster, but looking at the Sabres current depth, it could indicate that either Patrick Kaleta or Andrew Peters, younger brother of former Pirate Geoff Peters, could be heading to Portland.
