Junior Showcases

The Portland Junior Pirates organization had two teams participate in a Showcase. The Junior A squad participated in the AJHL Showcase and the Junior B team took part in the MJHL Showcase. The AJHL Showcase was held in Cornwall, Connecticut and the MJHL Showcase took place in Hackensack, New Jersey.

It was a tough weekend for the Junior A squad as they lost all three games. In their first game against the Washington Jr. Nationals, they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker. Ryan Boucher, John Melancon, Nick Cummings, and Derek Tomes were the goal scorers for the Pirates. Dustin Oberlander, Connor Anthoine, Paul Kashmanian, Derek Tomes, and John Melancon all recorded an assist. The game winner came from the son of former NHL player Peter Bondra, David Bondra, who was the 300th and the final pick of the 2008 Ontario Hockey League Draft. Saturday, the New York Bobcats cruised by the Pirates with the 6-1 win. Boucher got the only goal and Kashmanian got the lone assist. The New Jersey Rockets won a thriller as they beat Portland 3-2 on Sunday.

Evan Schultz was the hero on Friday night as the Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Little Flyers 1-0 in overtime. On Sunday Schultz and Michael Scally had a multiple point game in the 6-4 victory over the New Jersey Renegades. Schultz added a goal and an assist. Scally had a goal and two assists. Ethan MacDonald, Cameron Cain, Mike St. Denis, and Shawn Hird were the other goal scorers for the Pirates. Elias Wissman, Paddy Murphy, and Deven Alves also tallied assists.

Keeping up with Maine recruits playing in the Northeast, Adam Shemansky had a five point weekend in his first two games with the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs. He had one goal in the 5-5 tie against the New Jersey Hitmen. He had four assists on Saturday night also against the Hitmen. Kelen Corkum had three goals in the 6-5 victory on Saturday. Pontus Hansson relieved Nick Therrien on Friday and turned away 10 shots on 12 chances.

Brian Dumoulin assisted on Shemansky’s goal on Friday. He also had a goal and an assist Saturday night.

Out in Sioux City, Iowa where the USHL Fall Classic took place this past weekend. Mark Anthoine, a Lewiston, Maine native and Maine recruit, had an assist in three games for the Chicago Steel. The Steel went 1-2 in the Classic. Derek Arnold had two assists for the Waterloo Blackhawks. Johnnie Searfoss had one goal for the Fargo Force as they went 0-3 in the tournament.
