Hockeyville shows no love for the Sabres
- Updated: September 23, 2008
Roberval, QC – After a dismal 40 minutes of play, the Sabres showed some life in the final period, but the Montreal Canadiens held on for the 3-2 win at Benoit Levesque Arena in Roberval, Quebec.
Roberval, just a little over three hours north of Quebec City, won the honor to host the game as part of the “Kraft Hockeyville 2008” contest. While it was only a preseason game, many in attendance may never have an opportunity to an NHL game live, so this to them might as well have been game seven of the Stanley Cup finals.
Roberval, population 10,744, packed Benoit Levesque Arena (1,200+) to see the Habs build a 3-0 lead on Buffalo before Derek Roy scored for the Sabres.
Early in the third period, Roy put the brakes on at the left post, faking the shot, before snapping it through the five-hole of Habs goaltender Marc Dennis.
Nathan Gerbe scored his first of the preseason, late in the period, when he ripped a shot over the glove of Denis to pull the Sabres to within a goal.
Tomas Plekanec scored two goals for Montreal and Andrei Kostitsyn netted the other.
Adam Dennis replaced Patrick Lalime in net with the Sabres to start the third period, not allowing a goal.
