Ryan earns first award of the season for the Pirates

Portland, ME – And let the awards begin to roll in.

Former Pirate Bobby Ryan was named to the All-Rookie team as the American Hockey League made the announcement earlier this afternoon.

Ryan has spent considerable time with both the Pirates and Ducks this season. In 48 games with the Pirates this season, he’s scored 21 goals, 28 assists for 49 points as well as being named a starter for PlanetUSA in the AHL All-Star Classic that took place in Binghamton, NY.

The second overall draft pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft opened the season with the Anaheim Ducks, scoring in his first NHL game before being sent to Portland. Ryan has been with the Ducks since March 7 after Corey Perry suffered a nasty leg injury. In 21 games with Anaheim, he’s put up seven points (4g 3a).

The Cherry Hill, N.J. native just celebrated his 21st birthday last month.

Ryan is also up for the Dudley Red Garrett Award (AHL Outstand Rookie), which joins Pirates’ defenseman Brian Salcido who has been nominated for the Eddie Shore Award (AHL Best Defenseman). Salcido tied a team record for points in a season (50), which was set back by Nick Naumenko back in 2002. Salcido has 10 goals, 40 assists in 66 games with the Pirates this season. Also up for an award is Pirates’ goalie Mike McKenna, who has been nominated for the Yanick Dupre Award as the AHL’s Man of the Year for his civic contribution in the Southern Maine community including the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.

Another Ducks prospect is joining the Pirates.

Kyle Klubertanz has signed an ATO with the Pirates after his Univ. of Wisconsin Badgers fell, 3-2 in OT to North Dakota in the NCAA Hockey Tournament.

Klubertanz is the Ducks 3rd round draft pick (74th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. In 158 games with Wisconsin, Klubertanz has 12 goals, 60 assists for 72 points.

The QMJHL selection committee has a press conference scheduled for 11am tomorrow to announce who is the winner of the 2009 Memorial Cup. Lewiston is one of five cities in the running for the event.
