Dixon pulls Pirates over Monarchs in OT

Portland, ME – Stephen Dixon scored his second goal of night just 16 seconds into overtime as the Portland Pirates battled back to defeat the Manchester Monarchs, 5-4 in front of a boisterous crowd of 5,614 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night.

It was actually the third time the Pirates came back from being down at least one goal in the game.

Manchester is currently ranked number one in the league on the power play (clicking at 27.2%), continued their good fortune with the extra attacker when Peter Harrold scored the lone goal of the period for the Monarchs at 3:54 of the first period.

Brian Boyle won the face-off on a set play back to Harrold, who unloaded a shot from the high slot. The puck hit the right post, beating Pirates’ goaltender Gerald Coleman, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

Portland is also ranked near the top of the league in the power play at 22.3%.

Just 53 seconds into the second period, with Lauri Tukonen serving a minor for goaltender interference, Bobby Ryan scored his sixth-goal of the season when he tipped Jason King’s shot from the slot, beating Jon Quick, playing his first AHL game.

Likewise, the penalty kill has been a source of concern for the Pirates (ranked 25th at 78.9%); they allowed the Monarchs to regain the lead on a play similar to the first goal scored by Harrold.

At 1:37, Peter Harrold fired the shot from the point, with Brian Boyle driving the net; he tipped the puck by Coleman for a 2-1 lead.

At 10:17, Harrold scored his second goal of the night with another hard shot through a screen from the left face-off dot, beat Coleman between the five-hole.

With the Pirates down 3-1, they began the comeback at 15:17 of the second period when Brian Salcido fired laser by Quick to pull within one goal.

The period was coming to a close with 38 seconds left when Stephen Dixon drove past Troy Milam, cutting across the net, stuffing the shot by a stretched out Quick as the Pirates came back from the two-goal deficit.

Both teams played a defensive game in the final period.

However, a defensive miscue by the Pirates while on the power play led to the Monarchs getting what was believed to be the game-winning goal.

Brendan Mikkelson tried to pinch along the near sideboards, but the puck squirted by to Richard Petiot, who sent the puck up ice to David Meckler.
Meckler dished a cross-ice pass to Jeff Giuliano, who snapped a shot on goal. The puck just trickled by Coleman as he tried to sweep it away from the goal line as the Monarchs grabbed a 4-3 lead four minutes left in the game.

With 21 seconds left in the game, the Pirates generated some pressure down low, cycling the puck. Jason King skating to the slot fired a slap shot to the left post, tying the game at 4-4, sending it to overtime.

In the overtime period, it only took 16 seconds as Stephen Dixon picked up Brian Salcido pass, racing into the offensive zone, lifting a backhander by under the crossbar, leaving Quick stunned.

NOTES: Since joining the Portland Pirates, Geoff Platt has 12 points in six games including three assists tonight… Eric Weinrich was a healthy scratch… Mike Hoffman was out with an injury to his hand, suffered in a game against Providence on Friday night.
