LIVE: In-Game Blog – Portland vs Manchester

Both teams are in the middle of warmups, the Pirates have Gerald Coleman in net tonight. His last game was against the Lowell Devils, where he earned a 3-0 shutout victory.

Jon Quick is getting his first AHL start for the Monarchs.

The Pirates are going with a different look in the line up as Eric Weinrich is sitting tonight, Portland will go with five defenseman, opting to dress an extra forward.

Portland Scratches:
Eric Weinrich (Healthy)
Mike Hoffman (Hand)
Joe Callahan (Foot)
Shane Hynes (Foot)

Starting line for Portland:

3:50 – Portland Penalty – Wirtanen off for hooking.

3:54 – MCH GOAL – Power Play Goal – (Harrold from Boyle) Just like that, the Monarchs are up 1-0 as Peter Harold scored just four seconds into the PP.

(The Pirates are running around and look a little disorganized.)

(Jon Quick makes a nice glove save on Pirates’ defenseman Bruno St. Jacques)

7:47 – Manchester Penalty – Drew Bagnall sits for interference.
(Bobby Ryan was just leveled by Bagnall shortly after releasing the puck, for his actions, he’ll sit)

(On a great scoring chance, the Pirates find themselves with a short five-on-three. Andrew Ebbett missed just wide on a cross-ice pass.)

9:43 – Manchester Penalty – Trevor Lewis goes for hooking.

14:02 – Portland Penalty – Jason King goes off for tripping. (Manchester is currently 1-for-1 on the PP.)

(Drew Bagnall is not endearing himself to the Portland Pirates. He attempted to check Tyler Bouck at the knees. Bouck obvisouly taking exception, welcomed Bagnall to an exchange of receipes…. Both will sit for five minutes for their troubles.)

19:44 – Manchester Penalty – Lauri Tukonen is called for goaltender interference.

(With one period of play in the books the Monarchs have a 1-0 lead. Portland outshot Manchester 9-7, after getting off to a slow start in the period.)

0:53 – POR GOAL -Power Play Goal – (King from Platt and Salcido) Jason King let a shot rip from the top of the point, beating Quick for the power play goal (Guess he wasn’t Quick enough).

1:32 – Portland Penalty – Mikkelson goes off for holding right after the goal.

1:37 – MCH GOAL -Power Play Goal – (Boyle from Harrold) On an identical play as the first goal, Brian Boyle tipped the puck by Coleman from a blast by Peter Harrold.

(Manchester leads 2-1)

3:34 – Portland Penalty – Ryan Carter called for goaltender interference.

(This penalty could be considered a makeup for the earlier goaltender interference call on Manchester.)

7:24 – FIGHT – Brandon Segal and Paul Crosty go for another romp in the hay. Both would sit for five minutes.

10:17 – MCH GOAL – (Harrold(2) from Kanko) Peter Harrold with his second of night sending a blast between the legs of Coleman.

(It looks like the Pirates had a little too much turkey. They look slow, fat and a little intoxicated….. Hey, wait a minute!!! That’s me….;))

15:03 – Manchester Penalty – Peter Harrold is off for roughing.

15:17 – POR GOAL – Power Play Goal – (Salcido from Platt and King) Brian Salcido sends a nice wrist shot from high-slot, which caught Quick by surprise.

16:02 – Portland Penalty – Bruno St. Jacques goes off for roughing shortly after the Pirates goal.

(Andy Schneider just drops 6-7, 250-pound Brian Boyle in front of the net.)

18:19 – Portland’s Brendan Mikkelson and Manchester’s David Meckler are heading to the box for roughing after a little after whistle shoving.

(Bobby Ryan fired a sweet cross-ice pass to Stephen Dixon, but the puck just hobbled off his stick.)

(Bobby Ryan is a mad-man tonight. After making the pass to Dixon, he drilled Peter Harrold behind the Monarchs’ net.) – (Harrold is saying to himself, “I twat I saw a puty cat?!?!”)

19:22 – POR GOAL – (Dixon from Salcido and Platt)
Dixon turned on the jets, beating Troy Milam, who apparently felt the need to take a cat nap. Dixon just stuffed the shot by Quick to tie the game, 3-3.

Change in the scoring: The first Portland Pirates goal has been credited to Bobby Ryan with assists going to Jason King and Geoff Platt

Just a note: Geoff Platt has 12 points in six games with Portland since his trade, including three assists tonight.

Midway into the third period, both teams have settled down and playing safe defensive hockey.

14:02 – Manchester Penalty – Paul Crosty off for boarding.
Crosty hit Andrew Ebbett from behind deep in the zone. This is a big moment for the Pirates to grab a lead. The Monarchs are dead last on the PP at 74.4%.

Face-off in the Pirates zone.

16:00 – MCH GOAL – Shorthanded Goal – (Giuliano from Meckler and Petiot) Brendan Mikkelson tried to pinch, but the puck squirted by him to Meckler and Giuliano for a two-on-one the other way. Giuliano’s shot just trickled over Coleman’s leg pad as it went into the net. (It’s the Pirates second shorthand goal allowed in as many games)

17:07 – Manchester Penalty: Teddy Purcell is sitting for hooking

19:39 – POR GOAL – (King from Salcido and Wirtanen) Jason King scored the biggest goal of the season off the face-off. Wirtanen won the face-off back to King, who ripped the puck by Quick as the Pirates tie it with 21 seconds left in the game.

0:16 – POR GOAL – (Dixon from Carter and Salcido) Scratch that, Stephen Dixon on a backhander under the crossbar as he blew by Harrold. Quick was certainly caught by surprise looking into the net.
