Pirates roster set for opening weekend

Portland, ME – The Portland Pirates have finalized their roster for the 2007-08 season. With the season set to begin on Friday, October 5 against Springfield, The Pirates will have 25 players on the roster.

Instead of having players with defined roles, the Pirates will look for contributions from several players as they try to develop a team that is much more balance

“We need a lot of things to work well for us,” said Pirates’ Head Coach Kevin Dineen. “We need good goaltending, I think that’s one of the more important issues for us. We need our defense to get involved in the play and to be a part of our offensive group. We can’t have them move the puck once and they think they’re done. There’s a lot of guys [on the team] that have to play a big role and be stingy to play against and show some offensive upside.”

Missing the beginning of the season will be forwards Bobby Bolt and Shane Hynes. Bolt will be out indefinitely with a broken hand suffered in the 5-2 loss to the Monarchs on Sunday. Hynes suffered a broken foot and is also out a undetermined amount of time. Hynes is currently in the final year of his entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks and has yet to really see any time in Portland. In his first season, he played 12 games before suffering a season-ending knee injury, which required surgery. Last season, he was demoted to Augusta (ECHL) during training camp in order to get playing time and work on building his leg strength back after missing 11 months. In 49 games, he scored 17 goals, 28 assists for 49 points with the Lynx. In the early portion of training camp, he was much more confident on the ice and it showed results in his play.

One player who certainly made a statement was defenseman Andy Schneider as he was signed to a one-year AHL deal by the Anaheim Ducks. He was invited to the Anaheim Ducks rookie camp after missing all of last season with a broken wrist. He was the leading scorer for Ducks after the two game tournament against San Jose and he played exceptionally well in his two games for Portland during the preseason.

“He’s not pretty. The points he got (Saturday) were just a result of getting shots on net and those are when good things happen,” said Dineen. “Good decisions by him and we’re very happy with his week in practice and obliviously( Saturday).”
