Pirates End Season with a Bang

Portland, ME – Despite the Portland Pirates not making the playoffs, they gave the 5,753 something to remember over the summer as they won easily, beating the Hartford Wolf Pack 5-2 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates wanted to make sure they left a positive feeling in the fans mind, after a lackluster season.

For the Pirates, it didn’t begin that way as they found themselves down 1-0 only nine seconds into the first period. On the opening face-off, Marvin Degon fed the puck to Alex Bourret rushing up ice. Bourret dished to Nigel Dawes, who snapped a quick wrist shot over Pirates goaltender Gerald Coleman.

What was a minuscule event at time would later play a role in the game as Trevor Gillies attempted to fight Wolf Pack enforcer Francis Lessard, who thought better of the repercussions at the time and skated away.

At 5:02, Greg Amadio tied the game at 1-1 for Portland as he ripped a slap shot from the top of the slot, beating Wolf Pack goaltender Al Montoya through the five-hole. Bobby Ryan was credited with an assist on the play, working the puck out of the corner and finding Amadio open at the top of the slot.

The Pirates had a five-on-three for 23 seconds late in the period, but couldn’t capitalize on the two-man advantage. However, with one minute left in the period while the Pirates were still on the power play, Ryan Carter fired an innocent shot on goal, which appeared that Montoya handled, but it flickered out of his goal into the net, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

The second period began before it really began as a melee ensued between both teams while coming back on to the ice.

Trevor Gillies and Francis Lessard (remember earlier in the first period, right?) bumped each other at the red line, Gillies heading to the Pirates bench was jumped by Lessard causing an all out brawl as all 39 players on the ice to found a partner. During the fight Lessard spit on Gillies as well as Pirates Assistant Coach Bruce Crowder.

In addition, when Lessard was escorted off the ice, he issued single digit salutes to the crowd. It would be roughly five minutes before order was restored to the game and the second period would begin. Lessard received a major for fighting, a double gross misconduct for spiting and the gestures, and a game misconduct for fighting before the period began. Gilles received a game misconduct and fighting major for his role in the altercation.

During the rumble, Al Montoya was involved; he had a heated exchange with Wolf Pack Head Coach Jim Schoenfeld, who removed him from game in favor of Alex Westlund.

The Pirates would blow the game wide open in the middle stages of the second period, as they would strike for three goals in a span of 1:09.

At 11:57, Matt Christie scored his second goal of the season when he cut across the slot, whipping a quick snap shot by Westlund, extending the Pirates lead to 3-1.

Ryan Carter made it 4-1 when he sent a wrist shot on net, before being tripped up and crashing into the Westlund at 12:34 of the period. Bobby Ryan added his second assists of the game on the play.

With Ryan Carter serving a minor penalty for boarding, Clay Wilson would increase the Pirates lead to four as he scored his ninth goal of the season at 13:06 of the second period. Brian Salcido corralled a turnover by the Wolf Pack at the far blue line sending Wilson up ice as he drilled a wrist shot from the left face-off dot, beating Westlund under the crossbar to give the Pirates a 5-1 lead and all the offense they would need.

Alex Bourret added a power play goal for the Wolf Pack at 13:09 of the third period as he lifted the puck over a sprawled out Coleman.

Gerald Coleman finished the season with a .500 (6-6-0) record as he stopped 28 of 30 shots he faced in the victory, while Al Montoya and Alex Westlund combined for the loss.
