Salcido Keeps Pirates Playoff Hopes Alive

Portland, ME – Mike Hoffman scored a Gordie Howe hat trick and Brain Salcido added the winner in overtime as the Portland Pirates defeated the Norfolk Admirals, 4-5 in front of 4,436 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Sunday afternoon.

This was a must win for the Pirates if they wish to any hope of the playoffs, but they almost gave it all away, squandering a two-goal lead in the third period.

With the Pirates up 4-2, the Admirals began the rally while a man down.

Colin Fraser fired the initial shot on net, but the rebound came to Carl Corazzini, who banged the puck by Pirates goaltender Gerald Coleman at 9:35 of the third period.

At 13:17, while Matt Keith was serving a bench minor for too many men on the ice, Troy Brouwer tied the game at 4-4 as he sent a shot from slot, beating Coleman over his right leg pad.

Fortunately, Brian Salcido ended what could have been a devastating blow to the Pirates playoff hopes with rocket from the right point with 2:09 left in overtime session.

“We looked like we weren’t going to be denied tonight,” said Pirates Head Coach Kevin Dineen. “That was a hard-fought game, we caught a tired team and we took advantage of that a little bit and brought it home. It was two points we had to have.”

The Pirates would get on the board first as they sustained a fair amount of pressure in their zone, Garett Bembridge sent a shot on Admirals’ goaltender Mike Brodeur, who lost his stick as Drew Miller, diving toward the net, tipped the puck past Brodeur at 8:54 of the first period.

Troy Brouwer, parked in front of Coleman, cleaned up the rebound from Dustin Byfuglien’s shot from the top of the right face-off circle as the Admirals tied the game 1-1 at 12:34 while on the power play.

Just 1:52 into the second period, Ryan Carter gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead, blasting a one-timer for Matt Keith from behind the net, beating Admirals goaltender Mike Brodeur for left face-off circle.

Former Portland Pirate Pierre Parenteau made his return to the place where he spent the last year and half, scoring on Pirates goaltender Sebastien Caron with a fiery wrist shot underneath the cross bar at 3:25 of the second period.

“It was fun,” said Parenteau. “It was a good atmosphere and battle tonight. We played ok tonight, that was our last game of a [really] long road trip and you could that was the case tonight. It was a good hockey game and it was fun to play back in Portland. It was fun to see all the boys, even if they did trade everyone away this year.”

With the game tied 2-2, Mark Hartigan put the Pirates back out in front with a great individual effort as Trevor Gillies sent the puck goal, Hartigan found the rebound, sliding a backhander by Brodeur.

Pirates’ newcomer Mike Hoffman completed his Gordie Howe hat trick when he notched his eighth goal of the season, when made several nice inside-out moves, stuffing the puck by Brodeur

“We really picked it up going into overtime,” said Hoffman. “It’s a great confidence booster, especially right now with our team fighting for a playoff spot, beating the best team in the league and it just what we need to go and make a good playoff run.”
