Pirates Slide Further from Playoffs

Portland, ME – With only 22 games left in the season, the Portland Pirates are currently sitting in sixth place with 61 points, only four points out of playoff position. However, as the Pirates approach tonight’s game with a must-win attitude against the division-leading Manchester Monarchs, the Pirates once again find themselves bitten by inconsistent play, giving up four third period goals as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the Monarchs in front of 6,183 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The game was scoreless until the late stages of the second period when Matt Moulson notched his 16th of the season, unassisted with 2:58 left in the period as the puck squirted from behind the net, Moulson pounced on the puck, beating newly acquired goaltender Gerald Coleman.

In the third period, the Pirates still felt the game was in reach despite giving up a quick goal. Gabe Gauthier found the back of the net when the he sent his own rebound by Coleman, putting the Monarchs up 2-0 at 3:48 of the third period.

“We were firing good shots on net,” said Pirates center Mark Hartigan. “The rebounds were there, we just didn’t seem to have our guys in the right spot. The opportunity was there [for the win]. [Manchester] played a good game and stuck right in there until we started to make mistakes.”

Manchester extended their lead a few minutes later. At 6:14, Oleg Tverdovsky scored his first goal of the season, since being reassigned to the Monarchs by Los Angeles, giving the Monarchs a 3-0 lead.

At 14:01, Greg Amadio would get the Pirates on the board, beating Barry Brust with a laser beam from the right point. The goal was Amadio’s first professional goal.

With one second left on a five-on-three, Manchester capitalized with Joe Motzko and Greg Amadio in the box. Marty Murray found the loose puck and slid it underneath Coleman, reestablishing the three-goal lead with 3:34 left in the game.

Just 18 seconds later, with Amadio still in the penalty box, Noah Clarke added icing to the cake for his team-leading 21st goal of the season.

“Our lack of discipline in the third period, said Pirates Assistant Coach Bruce Crowder, “three hooking penalties against the team that is the fourth best power play. We held them pretty good early on the penalty kill, but you just can’t do that against the top team and expect to be successful.”

Gerald Coleman stopped 24 of 29 shots, suffering the loss in his Pirates debut, while Barry Brust stopped 27 of 28 shots for the win.

Plank Notes:
– The Pirates are currently 1-for-2 on the penalty shot as Drew Miller missed a chance in the first period. This was the second consecutive game in which the Pirates were awarded a penalty shot.
