Pirates Spear Sharks

Portland, Maine– The Portland Pirates must play every game as if they were in the playoffs, continuing to push for that fourth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. The Pirates played the Worcester Sharks who currently holds fourth place by a mere four points, but the Pirates currently have a game in hand, making this match up much more important.

The Pirates playing only their second home game in February would cruise by the Sharks 4-1 in front of a rambunctious 5,598 fans at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Sunday. This was considered a must win for the Pirates as they have struggled in divisional games and could not afford to give up a single point against the Sharks.

“We put ourselves in a position in late December and early January that points are important,” said Pirates Head Coach Kevin Dineen. “You get to a point where you’re watching standings and making sure that you are sharp.”

After a scoreless first period Worcester struck first in the second period when Pirates goaltender Sebastien Caron tried to clear the puck in the restricted zone, getting mixed up with Pirates’ defender Brian Salcido. As the puck squirted out into the slot Mike Iggulden found the puck and put it easily into the open net.

Mark Hartigan of the Pirates answered back just over a minute and half later. Matt Keith set up behind the net and found Hartigan, who put the puck past Worcester goalie Dimitri Patzold.

Caron had to be tended to after making a save during the second period. It appeared he was bothered by his finger on the blocker side that he broke while in Anaheim. Pirates’ Trainer Rick Burril came out to look at Caron as Wall started to warm up in the wing, but Caron made the decision to tough it out. He remained in the net for the rest of the game.

The Pirates took their first lead of the game at 17:48 of the second period. The Sharks turned the puck over in the neutral zone. Brian Salcido took the puck into the Worcester zone and passed it to an open Drew Miller, who guided the puck into the back of the net. The Pirates would take a 2-1 lead into the dressing room, a lead they rarely give up when leading after two periods of play as they are 13-2-0-4 when leading after the second period.

Pirates would begin the third period with a delay of game penalty. The penalty did not faze the Pirates at all as they would kill off the penalty and score two goals in the third period.

The first goal of the third period came at the hands of Matt Keith while on the power play as Brad Staubitz of the Sharks was in the box for charging. Matt Keith took a snap shot from above the left face off circle and stuffed it in short side.

“It’s a good group of guys here and we are starting to put points on the board and put some wins together. It feels good to win, but we are really starting to come together as a team,” said Pirates’ forward Matt Keith.

The second goal of the period was scored by Tim Brent, who took a slap shot from right inside the blue line, which bounced off Patzold. Brent picked up his own rebound and put it top shelf to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead with less than 10 minutes to play.

“This past road trip was a chance to get to know each other and build some chemistry. We definitely did that and it is showing on the ice,” said Pirates’ center Tim Brent.
