Versteeg Spoils Pirates Sweep in Norfolk

Norfolk, VA – It doesn’t matter what team Kris Versteeg is playing for as of late. Be it the Providence Bruins or his present team, Norfolk Admirals as he’s still a thorn in the side of the Pirates, scoring the game-tying goal and shootout game winner, helping the Norfolk Admirals past the Portland Pirates, 4-3 in front 3,130 at the Norfolk Scope on Wednesday night.

The Pirates held a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Pirates’ center Mark Hartigan, who is playing only his second game with Portland since being reassigned last Friday.

Hartigan scored his first goal at 6:47 of the first period while on the power play. Assists were given to Bjorn Melin and Joe Motzko, who extended his point-scoring streak to three games.

The Pirates would make 2-0 a little over six minutes later as Hartigan scored his second goal of the night. While on a four-on-four, Eric Weinrich dished the puck to Hartigan at the top of the slot, wristing a shot to the top corner, beating Admirals goaltender Joel Martin.

At 10:32 of the second period, the Admirals cut into the Pirates lead as Carl Corazzini fired a one-timer from Kris Versteeg, beating goaltender Sebastien Caron.

Aaron Rome wasted no time extending the Pirates lead back to two goals as he scooped up Martin’s deflection in the slot, burying the rebound at 12:39 of the second period to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead.

Adam Berti sent a slap shot from the left face-off circle, beating Caron inside the near post with 5:05 left in the second period, pulling the Admirals back to within one after 40 minutes of play.

With 3:24 left in the game, Kris Versteeg sent the game into overtime, scoring his 23rd goal of the season.

Both teams skated to a scoreless overtime period, before Kris Versteeg and Jonas Nordqvist scored in shootout to give the Admirals the come from behind win.

Sebastien Caron stopped 33 of 36 shots in the loss, while Joel Martin, in only his second start in the AHL, earned the win by stopping 23 of 26 shots.
