Pirates Plunder the Admirals

Norfolk, VA – The Portland Pirates continue to build momentum on their current five-game road trip as they scored three third period goals to defeated the Norfolk Admirals 4-2 in front of a near capacity crowd of 8,174 at the Norfolk Scope on Saturday night.

For two teams that only see each other a few times a season, the first period carried a tone as if both team were deeply entrenched in a playoff battle. With some respects Portland is in playoff battle as each point is crucial to the Pirates making the Calder Cup playoffs.

The Pirates had a couple early chances, but it was the Admirals who carried the play for most of the 20 minutes including a five minute power play for Portland. Martin St. Pierre gave Joe Motzko a vicious hit from behind near the penalty box at 10:17 of the period. Motzko was slightly bloodied and down for several minutes before returning to the player bench as St. Pierre was given a five minute major for boarding and a game misconduct.

With the Pirates on an extended power play, they were unable to get much accomplished as their best chance came in the final seconds as Simon Ferguson had a breakaway on to be stopped by Admirals’ goaltender Corey Crawford.

The rough stuff continued late in the period when Petteri Wirtanen was called for kneeing near the Pirates bench. Wirtanen and Admirals defenseman David Koci were each given roughing as a scuffle ensued.

The Admirals wasted no time in the second period, while still on a power play Danny Richmond fired a shot wide of the net, deflecting off Kent Huskins skate into the net just 13 seconds into the period. Pirates’ goaltender Michael Wall had no chance on the play.

Tim Brent scored his 13th goal of the season, second on the road trip as the Pirates tied the game at 1-1. Pirates forward Joe Motzko fired a shot on net, but the puck hit Jordan Hendry skate, bouncing to Brent, who lifted the puck over a sprawled Corey Crawford at 10:56 of the second period.

Norfolk regained the lead while on the power play with a laser by Dustin Byfuglien.

With Drew Miller serving two minutes for hooking, the Pirates were called for too many men on the ice at 16:27, giving the Admirals a two man advantage for over a minute. Byfuglien fired a shot from the top of the zone, beating Wall, stickside just 12 seconds later.

Again, the Pirates tied the game on a goal by Joe Motzko only 14 seconds into the period. Motzko racing down the far boards, snapped a wrist shot, labeled for the far corner, beating Crawford.

At 17:08, the game appeared like it was heading into overtime, but Simon Ferguson came streaking in from the left side unprotected, shoveling a pass from Geoff Peters by Crawford to give the Pirates their first lead of the game at 3-2.

The Pirates made it interesting for those in attendance at the Scope as Drew Miller was called for hooking with 1:30 left on the clock, but it was Pirates who sealed the game as Ryan Carter scored an empty-net goal with 6 seconds left, giving the Pirates their second consecutive road game.
