Pirates Get Burned By Devils in Overtime

Lowell, Massachusetts– The Portland Pirates came in to Saturday’s contest against the Lowell Devils desperate for a win before the All-Star break. Portland knew to win the game their net-minding had to be solid and they need to find a way to turn their convert some of their shots in to goals.

The Pirates were unable to break their five game losing streak. They lost to the Devils 3-2 in overtime in front of 2,943 fans at the Tsongas Arena.

Two new faces were in the line up for Portland. Shane Endicott and Joe Motzko suited up for the Pirates, both were acquired on Friday. Shane Endicott came from the Nashville Predators and Joe Motzko came from the Columbus.

“I didn’t feel too bad out there tonight. I think we have a good team here and I’m excited to play the rest of the year with Portland” said Endicott.

Motzko arrived in Portland on Friday and traveled down to Lowell with the team. Endicott flew in to Boston and met the team in Lowell.

The Pirates played well in the first period despite having so many roster moves in the last week. The only goal of the period was scored by Andy Greene, his sixth of the year. The Devils screened goalie Dov Grumet-Morris and Greene lifted the puck over Grumet-Morris’ shoulder.

Lowell dominated most of the second period. It took the Pirates approximately five minutes to get their first shot on goal.

The Pirates started to really lag after the ten minute mark in the second period. Lowell took the chance and ran with it as they doubled their lead at 16:23. Chris Minard scored his 18th goal of the season.

Portland answered back late in the second period to close the gap. Geoff Peters took a slap shot from the left side and sent a laser over Frank Doyle’s blocker. Peters was set up by Eric Weinrich. That was Weinrich’s first point of the season and his first AHL point since 1990.

“Coming back from 2-0 is a good sign for this hockey team. It is just a step in the right direction for us” said Pirates’ Center Geoff Peters.

The Pirates ended the second period knowing that they needed to score early on in the third period. The Pirates have struggled during the third period all season long. They gave up three goals to Providence in the third period on Friday night. The Pirates came in to Saturday night 1-13-0-1 when trailing after the second period.

About four minutes in to the third period Peters put in his second goal of the night to tie up the game. Weinrich took the original shot from the blue line and Peters deflected it in.

Grumet-Morris made some great saves including a few off of his face mask to keep the Pirates in the game. Neither team was able to find the back of the net again in regulation and the game headed to overtime.

The Pirates and Devils continued to play well in to the overtime. Both teams had some excellent shots but both Doyle and Grumet-Morris came up with some superb saves. During the dying seconds of the overtime the Pirates made a mistake that cost them the game.

The Pirates defense collapsed and gave up the puck right in front of their net. Barry Tallackson recovered the puck and put it past Grumet-Morris to edge the Devils over the Pirates.

There is some gelling that needs to happen with this team. Tonight was a little step and that is where we are at, taking baby steps” said Pirates’ Coach Kevin Dineen. “This was a good effort and there isn’t much more to say about it.”
