Pirates Rough Seas Continue

By CJ Nordenson, Special to MVN

Providence, RI – The Portland Pirates came into Sunday having lost three straight games and seven straight on the road. The Pirates came into Providence looking to put the struggle behind them and their first win since last Sunday’s win against Worcester in a shootout.

The Pirates fell to the Bears for a second night in a row by a score of 3-2 in front of 5,298 fans at the Dunkin’ Donunt Center on Sunday.

The game started where the teams left off on Saturday. The first period was approximately 41 minutes long and 95 penalty minutes were handed out. Zenon Konopka and Nate Thompson dropped their gloves just four seconds into the first period.

Brett Skinner was called for high-sticking just about two minutes into the first period and Providence grabbed the early 1-0 lead from a goal by Kris Versteeg.

Pirates’ forward Ryan Carter hit Petr Kalus in front of the Providence bench and the Bruins showed their displeasure with Carter. Kalus went after Carter, but Rome stepped in as everyone had grabbed another player by the end.

It took awhile for the officials to sort out the penalties. Rome had a few choice words for the officials which lead to a game misconduct, leaving the Pirates one player short. Carter received a five minute major for boarding. Kalus, Dwayne Zinger, Nathan Dempsey all received ten minute misconducts for Providence.

Another penalty was called against Portland only eight seconds after the scrap, giving the Bruins a two-man advantage for 1:52. In the dying seconds, Providence scored again putting them up 2-0. Nate DiCasmirro picked up his fifth goal of the season.

Brian Salcido and Kris Versteeg danced at the 9:30 mark as both received five minutes for fighting. In 11 minutes of play, the Pirates only had one shot on goal. Later in the second half of the first period the Pirates had three power plays in a row, but were unable to score.

Portland came out showing a little more offensive effort in the second period as both teams were getting plenty of opportunities, but Portland was the only one who was able to convert. With the Pirates on a power play, Drew Miller parked at the far post, tucked it past Bruins goaltender Philippe Sauve at 14:39 of the second period. Matt Keith and Tim Brent were credited with assists on the play.

The Bruins had 1:36 remaining on their power play to begin the third period, but were unable to convert on the chance as the Pirates were able to kill off the penalty.

The Bruins would extend their lead back to two goals at 11:20 when Kalus flicked the puck into the net off the rebound.

The Pirates answered just over a minute later when Curtis Glencross received a nice pass from Zenon Konopka, using fancy stick work, he threaded the puck past the Sauve to pull the pull the Pirates to back within one.

The Pirates had some great chances late in the third period, but were unable to capitalize as they pulled Dov Grumet-Morris with 46 seconds, but couldn’t do anything with the extra attacker.

Dov Grumet-Morris faced 29 shots, stopping 26 in the loss, while Philippe Sauve stopped 21 of 23 shots for the win.
